🌱🍇 Can agrivoltaics help climate-proof Canadian vineyards while generating clean energy?

One of the standout discussions at this year’s Agrivoltaics Canada Conference explored a first-of-its-kind commercial scale agrivoltaics project planned for BC’s wine region. The proposed system combines solar generation with advanced vineyard protection strategies designed to shield crops from extreme heat, wildfire smoke, hail, and freezing temperatures. The project aims to increase vineyard yields by 10–30% while supporting more consistent grape quality and renewable energy production. 🍷☀️

Jesseof Double Barrel Vineyards, presented the system at this year’s Agrivoltaics Canada conference.

The session also highlighted the realities of bringing agrivoltaics to commercial scale in Canada, from regulatory approvals and financing challenges to changing perceptions around dual-use farmland. As climate pressures intensify across agriculture, conversations like these are becoming increasingly important for the future of food and energy systems in Canada.

What if solar panels could help grow MORE food, not less? 🌾📊

New research shared at the Agrivoltaics Canada Conference shows that crops grown under solar panels can significantly outperform traditional farming methods.
We’re talking:
🌿 Up to 483% higher yields in Canadian trials
🍅 200–300% increases for some crops in the US
🥬 Better quality produce and healthier soils

By creating a cooler, more stable microclimate, agrivoltaics helps crops thrive — even under heat and water stress.
The big picture? This approach could help feed billions more people while generating clean energy and supporting farmers at the same time. A win for food. A win for energy. A win for climate. 🌍

Farmers are ready for renewable energy but the grid isn’t always ready for them ⚡🚫⚡

At our recent conference, we heard how even small agrivoltaics projects are being blocked or facing huge connection costs due to grid constraints. Meanwhile, demand for electricity is growing fast 📈
Here’s the twist: Agrivoltaics with battery storage can actually help the grid by producing power closer to where it’s used, improving reliability and resilience. So the same systems being pushed back today could be part of the solution tomorrow.

Unlocking that potential will take policy change and stronger collaboration across the energy sector 🤝

Agrivoltaics is ready but policy is holding it back ⚡🌱

At our recent conference, experts highlighted how current land use rules in Ontario are making it tough to scale agrivoltaics, even as demand for clean energy grows. These systems can generate electricity while keeping farms productive but strict limits mean many projects simply don’t fit within today’s regulations. Other provinces are starting to show what’s possible with more flexible approaches 👀

The opportunity is there. Now it’s about unlocking it.

Sheep + solar = a win for farmers, energy, and land use

Solar grazing is gaining real traction as a smarter way to manage vegetation on solar sites while opening up new income streams for farmers. It also supports animal welfare with shade from panels and helps farmers grow their flocks without needing more land
At a time when Canada relies heavily on imported lamb, this approach could play a key role in boosting domestic production
