Gender Equality Week: Leading by Example

We’re proud to spotlight Marteen Lindstrom, Principal with St. Albert Public Schools, and a woman who is helping shape the next generation of leaders. Marteen always knew she wanted to be a teacher, but she never imagined herself as a school administrator. It was a principal who saw her potential as a leader before she saw it in herself, encouraging her to take on new challenges and grow throughout her career.

Today, Marteen carries that same belief in possibility into her work. She understands the importance of young people seeing women in leadership and knowing that those paths are open to them. As she says, “We are planting seeds, and they are paying attention.” Her journey has been shaped by the women who believed in her, and now she is paying that forward by being an example for the students, educators and young women who are watching her.

Her advice to young women considering leadership or a traditionally male-dominated field?

Go for it. Believe in yourself. Take the risk.

A Circle is only as powerful as the community that grows within it, and the leaders who create the space for that community to thrive. For Jessi Sumra, leading our Fitness & Nutrition Circle with Lean In Edmonton has been an opportunity to do what she loves most: empower women to feel stronger, healthier, and more confident in themselves.

Through her leadership, Jessi has created a space where women can learn, stay accountable, celebrate their progress, and support one another through the ups and downs of creating healthier habits. Her approach is a beautiful reminder that wellness doesn’t have to mean perfection; it can be about small, sustainable choices and having people in your corner along the way.

Thank you, Jessi, for sharing your experience and for the heart, knowledge, and encouragement you bring to your Circle. We’re so grateful for leaders like you who help make Lean In Edmonton a place where women can connect, grow, and discover just how capable they are.

Looking to find your own Circle? We still have a few Circles in recruitment, and we’d love to help you find the right fit. Visit the link below to learn more and join a Circle.

We’re kicking off Gender Equality Week with someone who knows exactly what it means to challenge the norm.

Kelly Humphreys is a Journeyman Red Seal Automotive Service Technician, currently working at Unlimited Automotive in Edmonton’s west end. With 15 years in the trade, Kelly has built a career around working with her hands, solving complex problems, and proving that talent has no gender.

Her love for the automotive world started young, inspired by her dad and a rebuilt engine in the garage. Since then, she’s faced her share of barriers, but she stuck with it, letting her work speak for itself along the way. Beyond the shop, Kelly is a wife, mom, and an incredibly talented artist behind .

We’re proud to share a little bit of Kelly’s story this week, and hopefully inspire another woman to follow her gut, challenge the expectations placed on her, and pursue the career she wants, even when it doesn’t fit the “norm.”

Thank you, Kelly, for sharing your story with us.

We’re excited to introduce Lizeth Gaytan and Jennifer Hinnell, our co-hosts for this month’s Lean In Alberta Open Virtual Circle.

With an engineering background and a career built around solving complex problems and continuous learning, Lizeth is entering a new chapter, one focused on leadership, personal growth, and being more intentional about the direction she takes her career.

Jennifer Hinnell, founder of Rooted Coaching & Consulting, brings her experience in coaching, leadership, and personal development to the conversation. Her work centres around helping people reconnect with themselves, navigate change, and move forward with greater intention.

Together, Lizeth and Jennifer bring different experiences, perspectives, and approaches to the Circle; creating space for open, thoughtful conversations about where we are, where we’re going, and everything that happens in between.
And that’s exactly what makes our Open Virtual Circle so meaningful. We don’t all have to be in the same place in our careers or lives to learn from one another.
Sometimes, the most valuable insights come from hearing how someone else navigated a transition, embraced an opportunity, or figured out what they wanted next.

Wherever you are in your journey, there’s something to be gained from sharing the space with women who are navigating their own. Join Lizeth Gaytan and Jennifer Hinnell for our next Open Virtual Circle:

Tomorrow, September 22nd | 12:00–1:00 PM MST

There’s something powerful about realizing you don’t have to pursue your goals alone. 💛

For Maneet Bains, being part of the Lean In Health & Fitness Circle led by Jessi Sumra has been about so much more than fitness and nutrition. It’s about finding accountability, encouragement, and a community of women who genuinely want to see one another thrive.

We’re so grateful when Circle members share what these communities mean to them. Maneet’s experience is a beautiful reminder that sustainable growth happens when we give ourselves permission to celebrate progress, learn through the hard days, and lean on the women around us.

Thank you, Maneet, for sharing your experience and for being part of this community. And a huge thank you to Jessi Sumra for creating a space where women can become healthier, stronger, and more confident, together.

We love the reminders that encourage us to step outside the harbour, and this quote is one of Jennifer Hinnell’s favourites.

Growth often asks us to venture beyond what feels familiar and safe. Sometimes, that means having a conversation, exploring a new possibility, taking a chance on ourselves, or simply giving ourselves permission to imagine what could be next. That’s part of what our Lean In Alberta Open Virtual Circle is all about: creating a supportive space where women can pause, reflect, connect, and explore what it means to move forward, whatever that looks like for you.

You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going. Sometimes, you just need a safe space to start exploring. Join us for our next Open Virtual Circle and connect with women from across Alberta.

This month, we’re incredibly proud to spotlight Erin Gee Fithen, Social Media Manager & Events Coordinator for Unlimited Automotive & Performance, and an integral part of the business she has helped build over the past decade.

When Erin, her husband Ryan, and a business partner opened Unlimited Automotive & Performance in 2016, Erin was navigating a new chapter of life as a stay-at-home mom while wondering what her own career path might look like. With a background in psychology and education, she found an unexpected opportunity to bring her creativity, communication skills and curiosity to the family business.

What started as an opportunity to help advertise a growing automotive shop has become something so much bigger. Erin has built and manages Unlimited’s social media presence herself, helping tell the story of their business, connect with their community and make automotive knowledge more accessible. She also plays a key role in coordinating events that bring their community together and create opportunities for people to connect, learn and get involved.

And she isn’t just marketing an automotive business, she’s helping change who feels welcome in the automotive world. Erin is passionate about creating opportunities for women to learn, ask questions and feel confident in an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated. Through education, approachable content and in-person events, she continues to create space for more women to see themselves as part of the automotive community.

As Unlimited approaches its 10th anniversary, Erin’s contribution to the business is impossible to overlook. Erin is a wonderful example of how a career doesn’t always follow the path you imagined, sometimes you build something entirely your own along the way. We’re so proud to celebrate her, the work she does, and the impact she continues to make.

Lean In Edmonton is proud to donate $1,225 to 1000 Women Edmonton, made possible through the support of our incredible community at our April event, Stronger Together, Together We Rise.

We believe that when women come together, we have the power to create meaningful change; not only for ourselves, but for our communities. Supporting organizations like 1000 Women Edmonton allows us to extend that impact beyond our events and continue investing in women and the work they are doing to create a stronger, more connected community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, supported our event, and helped make this contribution possible.
