In 2022, Living Lab – Central Prairies was launched as a collaboration between SODCAP, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, producers, researchers, and other partners across the prairies, supported in part by AAFC’s Agricultural Climate Solutions – Living Labs program.

Since its inception, the project has brought together these collaborators in an iterative, on-farm living lab process – working together to co-develop, test, and build understanding of beneficial management practices suited to prairie farms and ranches.

The diversity of participants has created valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, and innovation, supporting the development of practical, science-informed approaches that producers can consider and adapt for their own operations and landscapes.

As Living Lab – Central Prairies approaches its conclusion in March 2027, we are excited to bring participants together in Saskatoon on December 15–16 to share key learnings from the project and discuss what they might mean for producers, researchers, and the broader agricultural community.

In partnership with SaskSoil , we hosted a field day at Farm One Forty, owned and operated by Living Lab – Central Prairies participants Brett and Arlie Laroche.

Throughout the day, we heard from Dr. Bart Lardner (University of Saskatchewan), Kiel Drake (Birds Canada ), Sahthi Akhter and Branimir Gjetvaj (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), and Keana Boere (Saskatchewan Agriculture).

We also had the opportunity to head into the field to see polycrops, rotational grazing paddocks, bale grazing sites, and more. Days like these remind us of the importance of knowledge sharing, collaboration, and gaining new perspectives.

🌎🌱 Every living thing contains carbon, and everything—including cattle and grasslands—are part of a carbon cycle. Raising cattle can have both positive and negative impacts on the carbon cycle and different management practices can affect the sector’s footprint.

Perennial forages and grasslands—the foundation of the cow-calf sector —can sequester between 50 and 200 tonnes of carbon per hectare below ground (in the root system) and 3 to 12 tonnes of carbon above ground (in plant growth and litter).

Mason Plews was a Masters student who worked on a project in collaboration with the Living Lab - Central Prairies focused on sod seeding perennials into existing forage stands to improve production. We asked Mason about his study and this is what he had to say…
