Representatives of Eastend Communities in Bloom joined staff of the Southwest Waste Management Authority Regional Landfill and volunteers to plant trees at the landfill 🌱
160 trees were planted., including: Colorado Blue Spruce, Saskatoon, Sand Cherries and Chokecherries.
The landfill is managed by a regional board made up of the Town of Eastend, Town of Shaunavon, RM of White Valley No. 49, RM of Grassy Creek No. 78, RM of Arlington No. 79, and RM of Bone Creek No. 108, and is a great example of what can be achieved when communities work together.
Under the leadership of Manager Kylie Entem and her hardworking team, the landfill has gone far beyond its essential operations—transforming the site through environmental stewardship, beautification, and long-term sustainability initiatives.
🌳 Over 1,300 trees have been planted in the last three years thanks to SaskPower’s Shand Greenhouse Shelterbelt Program, including poplars, white spruce, chokecherries, buffaloberry, Siberian crab, and lilacs.
🌸 Perennial gardens have also been established to support pollinators and beautify the site, with flowers and seeds generously donated by residents.
💧 A water-collection pond and rainwater tanks help keep the plantings thriving.
🍁 Four maple trees were also donated by the Eastend Economic Development Committee.
In 2023, the Regional Landfill was recognized with an Environmental Action Award, highlighting the positive impact of these ongoing environmental initiatives and regional partnerships.
Our landfill is a great reminder that it can be much more than a “dump”, it can also be a place of environmental action, tree management, and beautiful landscaping.
As Kylie says: “Just because it is a dump, that doesn’t mean it has to look or smell like one.”
