Now that Paramedic Services Week has wrapped up, and we’ve celebrated the incredible work paramedics and support staff do every day under the theme “Better Care Starts Here,” we also need to have the harder conversation.

If better care truly starts here, then better care for our staff must start with mental health supports.

Ontario’s paramedics continue to face some of the highest rates of workplace mental stress injuries in the province. According to new provincial data, there are currently 983 active WSIB mental health claims across Ontario paramedic services, with more than half of those workers unable to return to the job they love.

Behind every number is a paramedic who answered the call for their community.

Supporting paramedics means investing in timely mental health care, sustainable staffing, fair WSIB processes, and recovery-focused supports that help people heal instead of burning out.

Because when paramedics break down, the entire system feels it. Our communities rely on that system every single day.

Our Public Works teams help keep our city running every day, and during Public Works Week (May 17-23), we’re recognizing the important work they do!

From ensuring safe drinking water and reliable wastewater treatment, to managing traffic signals, road safety, and much more, Public Works staff work behind the scenes to keep everything moving smoothly.

Whether you’re curious about how services operate, want to see equipment up close, or are considering a career with Public Works, join us at the Public Works Open House on Saturday, May 23. It’s a great opportunity to connect, learn and explore!
