Have you noticed yellow particles floating on the water recently? It's pollen!

Pollen should not be mistaken for algae. It is yellow-green, dust-like, and floats mainly on the surface of water bodies.

In the spring and early summer, pollen from pines and other trees can fall onto the surface of the water forming a large yellow film. It may collect on the edge of shorelines or float for long periods in open water. It can also become water-logged and sink to the bottom.

While pollen is unpleasant for allergy sufferers, it is otherwise harmless.

Update: Fire Restriction lifted as of June 1, 2026.

Effective MAY 4, 2026 at 12:00 PM, the County of Wetaskiwin is under a FIRE RESTRICTION.

What is allowed:
β–ͺ Safe wood campfires within fire rings
β–ͺ Backyard fire pits and burn barrels on private land
β–ͺ BBQs and Smokers that use solid fuels (wood chips or pellets, charcoal briquettes, etc.)
β–ͺ Propane, Natural Gas, or Electrically powered cooking, heating, and lighting appliances
β–ͺ Open flame oil devices (turkey deep fryers, tiki torches)
β–ͺ Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor
β–ͺ Pellet fueled appliances

Under this Fire Restriction:
β–ͺ New fire permits will not be issued
β–ͺ Existing fire permits will not be renewed
β–ͺ All existing open burning permits are cancelled

What is prohibited:
β–ͺ All outdoor fires not contained within a fire ring
β–ͺ Wood campfires in backcountry or random camping areas
β–ͺ Fireworks and exploding targets

Off-Highway Vehicles can start wildfires – check frequently to ensure hotspots are free of debris and make sure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.

When operating equipment, clear debris from moving parts, check your muffler and keep equipment in good repair. Do not operate equipment in tall grass. Keep watch of your surroundings and ensure you have sufficient firefighting equipment and water available. Equipment fires or work-related sparks, friction and hot exhaust can cause even small amounts of dry fuels to ignite into a wildfire and spread easily.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.

The FIRE RESTRICTION will remain in effect until conditions improve.

Residents are encouraged to learn and implement effective Fire Smart tips to reduce hazard within their property, acreage, or farm. More information can be found at www.farmfiresmart.ca.

Thank you for your continued efforts in helping keep County of Wetaskiwin residents and communities safe!

**Leduc County is currently under no fire restrictions as of 9 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026. Note: Fire permits will be available to residents as long as wind conditions are under 20 km/h.**

Leduc County is now under a fire advisory as of 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026. There is an increased risk of wildfire due to upcoming weather conditions.

A fire advisory notice informs the public that the fire hazard rating has increased, and there may be certain restrictions on burning. A fire advisory is also a warning that more restrictive alerts may be approaching if the situation does not improve.
