Melinda French Gates has announced $215 million in new funding for women’s health worldwide through Pivotal.
The funding will support areas that have historically been overlooked, including:
💊 Access to contraception
🤰 Maternal and primary healthcare
🧠 Mental-health support for mothers
🌸 Menopause and midlife health
🔬 Research and improved healthcare for women
Among the announced grants are $40 million to Co-Impact to integrate mental-health care into maternal and primary healthcare systems, particularly in Africa, and $10 million to The Menopause Society to expand menopause education and access to care in the U.S.
This latest commitment brings French Gates’ philanthropic funding for women’s health to more than $600 million over the past two years.
Women make up half the world — but women’s health has been historically underfunded and under-researched.
This is an investment in changing that. 💗

To date, more than 124 million free menstrual products have been distributed through Food Banks Canada extensive national network - because menstrual products are a basic necessity.

Minister Valdez announced the figure today as one of the results of the Government of Canada's $86.8 million investment in the Menstrual Equity Fund national pilot project, delivered by Food Banks Canada.

This initiative is doing more than providing free menstrual products. It has:

✅ Reached nearly 70,000 people with menstrual health information and resources.
✅ Helped families save money for essentials like groceries, housing, and transportation.
✅ Supported people in attending school and work by ensuring they had the products they needed.
✅ Allowed recipients of menstrual products to miss fewer days of school and work because they had enough supplies to manage their periods safely and with dignity.

YYC Senior Ladies Slo-Pitch has donated 181 boxes of period products over 3 dates this summer. Beneficiaries of these donations have been Calgary Food Bank, Alpha House, the Pad Bank, Street Sisters, Youth Centres of Calgary, numerous Community Pantries and hundreds of hand-outs at Calgary Pride Parade. All recipients were extremely grateful, period products are expensive!
As TamponTuesdayYYC finishes off its 2nd year, we continue to work towards ending period poverty and stigma in our community. Partners like YYCSLSP make our dreams a reality, thank you!! 💜

Calgary’s Pride Parade was a huge success for Tampon Tuesday YYC. We handed out packages of period products, had meaningful conversations with change-makers, dozens of free ‘mom’ hugs and put on more steps than I knew my knees could do 🤪 Until next year Calgary 🏳️‍🌈

In consultation with members of Council and our City Solicitor, I have called a Special Meeting of Council on Tue Sept. 8. I have reasonable grounds to believe that a serious privacy breach may have occurred, posing potential safety risks to City personnel and significant financial or legal exposure. The meeting will be held in order for Council to hear immediate legal advice on the potential damage, our obligations, and what action is required to protect employees and taxpayers.
