Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak continue to be among Calgary’s safest communities.

The latest CPS data shows theft from vehicles remains our most common local crime issue, while violent crime remains comparatively low. Please keep removing valuables, locking vehicles and garages, and reporting suspicious activity.

🚸 Vision Zero

Traffic safety deserves just as much attention as crime prevention.

Calgary has grown, but the rise in fatal collisions, especially pedestrian deaths, is deeply concerning and increased from 11 fatalities in 2017 to 38 in 2025. Vision Zero means treating every death and serious injury as preventable.

Be proactive:

✅ Put phones away before driving
✅ Yield fully and watch for pedestrians and cyclists
✅ Talk to teen and new drivers about speed and distraction

📣 Year-End 2025 Safety Update — Rocky Ridge & Royal Oak (RRROCA)

Hi neighbours 👋

Here’s a full-year 2025 safety update for Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak using the latest available Calgary Police Service (CPS) and 311 Calgary dashboard data.

Overall, Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak continue to be among Calgary’s safest communities. The data also gives us some clear priorities to focus on together in 2026.

📊 2025 Crime Trends (CPS Dashboard)
City-wide (Calgary)

City-wide, crime trends have come down from earlier peaks and were roughly stable in 2025 compared with 2024 (based on the CPS dashboard summary trend view).

Rocky Ridge + Royal Oak (RRROCA area)
For our two communities combined in 2025, crime remains low in absolute numbers compared with many other areas of Calgary.

The most common issues in our area continue to be:
🚗 Theft from vehicles (the #1 issue by far)
🏠 Break & enter (dwelling / garage)
🚙 Vehicle theft (lower than theft-from-vehicle, but still important)

Violent crime remains low in RR/RO relative to many communities, but we still track it closely.

Year-over-year trend (RR + RO)
2023: down
2024: down again
2025: modest increase

That kind of fluctuation is common in lower-volume communities, but it’s a good reminder to stay proactive.

✅ Bottom line: RR/RO remains very safe, and the biggest prevention opportunity is still vehicle-related theft.

We also tracked 311 “Encampment Concerns” reports for both communities in 2025.

🎯 What the 2025 data tells us to prioritize in 2026
1️⃣ Block Watch

We’re approaching 500 members, which is a strong foundation.

In 2026, Block Watch will be a key way we keep neighbours connected and informed, with a focus on:

local awareness
practical prevention tips
reporting guidance (CPS vs 311)
sharing concerns in a calm, constructive way

👉 A connected street is a safer street.

2️⃣ Vehicle theft / theft-from-vehicle prevention

This remains the clearest crime trend in our area.

Simple actions still make the biggest difference:
remove valuables (bags, cords, wallets, tools, loose change)
lock vehicle doors
keep garage remotes out of sight
avoid leaving vehicles idling unattended unless secure

3️⃣ Public-space reporting (311)

Encampment concern reports were meaningful in both communities in 2025.

Please continue reporting:
encampment concerns
graffiti
broken lighting
public-space safety issues
discarded needles / drug paraphernalia (do not touch; report for safe removal)

Every report improves response and gives us a better picture of what’s happening locally.

4️⃣ Vision Zero (traffic and road safety)

Safety is more than crime stats.

A major priority for 2026 is also Vision Zero in our neighbourhoods:
safer speeds on collector roads
school-zone awareness
safer crossings for kids, walkers, and families

reducing risky driving behaviour in residential areas

This is one of the most common safety concerns residents raise, and it fits directly into our community safety work.

A Calgary-area parent let her child use the family laptop for schoolwork. A few days later, she noticed strange charges on her credit card, locked email accounts, and family photos held for ransom.

Hi neighbours 👋 — as we pass the halfway point of 2025, here’s a quick update on what we’re seeing in Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak, based on the latest data from the Calgary Police Service and 311.

🔍 Drug Paraphernalia

We’ve heard community reports about discarded needles in parks and green spaces, but the City’s 311 dashboard currently shows zero drug paraphernalia service requests for our area this year. We’re following up with our Community Resource Officer to confirm if these incidents are being properly captured.

📌 If you see discarded drug materials, please report them — even one report makes a difference and helps keep our public spaces safe.

Thanks to 311 data, we now have a clearer picture of local encampment trends:

🟣 Royal Oak: 9 encampment concerns reported so far in 2025 — mostly in June and July

Speed limits are designed for ideal road & weather conditions. It is crucial that motorists drive according to current weather conditions, including possible sun glare & allow for extra time to reach your destination if needed.

Every km over the posted speed limit increases the risk of severe collisions by the same amount as driving at the legal alcohol limit.

🚨 Rocky Ridge & Royal Oak Community Safety Update - Homelessness Concerns and Warming Centre🚨

First, a big shoutout to Lindsay Paul for her great work leading the discussions in the Families Facebook Group! Her dedication has been key in helping us stay informed and connected. Check out her latest update here:

RRROCA is working hard to ensure that your concerns about safety and homelessness are not only heard but acted upon. We’ve been engaging with Councillor Sonya Sharp’s office, our CPS Resource Officer, and our City of Calgary Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator, who regularly attends our monthly board meetings. We've learned from city officials that homelessness concerns have been growing city-wide (see the chart at the bottom of this message), and not limited to RO and RR. Communities along the C-Train lines are especially affected.

As the umbrella volunteer organization for the community, we are also considering how best to engage with the homeowners associations (HOAs) or other groups in the neighborhood. We are open to suggestions on how to foster collaboration with other organizations to best represent the community.

🚔 What’s Happening Now:
1. The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has increased patrols in our neighborhood, and the Community Engagement Response Team (CERT) started their focused efforts on September 9th around the Tuscany train station to help keep our area safe.
2. We’re gathering important data from CPS, 311 reports, and AlphaHouse, and will share more information with the community as it becomes available.
3. We’re working with the Calgary Federation of Communities to collaborate with other neighborhoods and find the best strategies for our area.
