I thought becoming a doctor was the definition of ambition as a young boy.

I later became an engineer and as I grew older, I realized something:

I wasn’t necessarily dreaming about becoming a doctor. I was dreaming about becoming someone people considered successful.

That realization changed how I see the current lconversation about young people being unambitious.

Today, a young person can say:

“I want to be a lash technician.”

“I want to become a virtual assistant.”

“I want to build a career in social media.”

“I want to freelance.”

And suddenly, someone asks if that is really ambitious?

Why do we attach ambition to certain job titles?

Doctor.
Lawyer.
Engineer.
Corporate executive.

Every career has a price but the price just looks different.

Yes, we should encourage young people to consider careers that are in demand and will give them good opportunities.

But choosing a different path doesn’t automatically make a young person lazy or unambitious.

Sometimes, ambition simply looks different from what we were taught to recognize.

Meet Raheema Auwal-Panti, at just 15 years old, she created PantiPads -biodegradable sanitary pads using agricultural waste such as cassava peelings, banana leaves and corn husks.

Her idea tackles two problems at once: agricultural waste and the challenge of accessing affordable, sustainable menstrual products.

And this is not just a school project sitting in a notebook.

PantiPads was shortlisted among 35 teams worldwide for the 2026 Earth Prize.

What’s most interesting is not even her age. It’s the way she looked at an ordinary problem and asked:

What if there was another way?

You don’t always need to wait until you’re older, richer or more experienced to start solving problems.

Sometimes, you just need to notice what everyone else has stopped noticing.

Meet Ashton Meyer, an 11-year-old from Ontario, Canada, who started going door-to-door offering to clean his neighbours’ garbage, green and recycling bins.

What started as a simple summer business has grown into YourBinCleaning, with around 30–40 regular customers and more than 100,000 followers online.

The most interesting part of Ashton’s story is not the followers. It's what happened before people started paying attention.

He had to knock on doors.
He had to hear “no.”
He had to keep going.

And he had to be willing to start with something that probably didn't look impressive at first.

That's a lesson worth remembering.
You don't always need a big idea. Sometimes you just need to notice a problem and be willing to solve it.

Your first opportunity may not look like the opportunity you imagined. It may be small, just start anyway.
