Effective tomorrow, Friday August 28, at noon PDT the Off Road Vehicle (ORV) prohibition is rescinded in the Southeast, Cariboo, Coastal and Kamloops Fire Centres.

We recognize that ORVs play an important role in recreation, hunting and accessing the outdoors for many. Restrictions are only considered when multiple factors indicate an elevated wildfire risk, heightened wildfire activity and limited capacity to respond to new fire starts.

With improving conditions in some regions of B.C., and cooler wetter weather in the forecast we are now able to rescind these prohibitions. We continue to monitor wildfire risk and prohibitions may be implemented or rescinded as conditions change.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by ORV users during this period. We know many riders take fire prevention seriously and recreate responsibly on established roads and trails. If you're returning to the backcountry, we ask for your support in reporting any new wildfires through our app or by calling *5555.

Fyi for anyone heading to BC

REGIONAL WILDFIRE UPDATE (posted: Aug.10.26 2:25pm)

A couple of important updates to pass along this afternoon including an Off-Road Vehicle Prohibition for the entire Southeast Fire Centre (including ALL OF THE RDEK).

🔥Matthew Creek Wildfire - W of Kimberley
• The planned ignitions on the Matthew Creek Wildfire did not proceed yesterday afternoon as conditions were not favourable
• Today, August 10, operational staff will again look to conduct the ignitions to remove unburnt fuel between the fires edge and pre-established control lines
• Planned ignitions will only go ahead if weather and site conditions allow and if they do, smoke will be visible from the City of Kimberly and surrounding area
• Operations are ongoing
• The Area Restriction remains in effect

🔥Tower Creek Fire - west of St. Mary Lake
• BEING HELD and is not expected to grow further beyond the pre-determined boundary or control lines
• It remains an active wildfire and crews will continue to be on it

🔥Calamity Creek Wildfire - 40km northwest of Kimberley
• Is now classified as BEING HELD and is not expected to grow beyond current control lines or boundaries
• It remains an active fire and is being regularly monitored
• Area Restriction in effect

There are no other significant changes to report on any of the other fires in the region. As always, the most up to date info on fires can be found on www.bcwildfire.ca

🚫OFF-ROAD VEHICLE BAN 🚫

Effective immediately off-road vehicles (ORV) are prohibited on crown land throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, which includes the entire East Kootenay.

▶The operation of any off-road vehicle for recreational purposes on Crown land will be prohibited and all on-highway vehicles must remain on road surfaces as defined in the Forest Planning and Practices Regulation.

The prohibition applies to off-road vehicles as defined in the Off-Road Vehicle Act and section 2 (a) of the Off-Road Vehicle Regulation:
• all-terrain vehicles
• motorcycles
• off road side-by-side vehicles

This prohibition does not apply to private lands or national parks. It also does not apply to emergency response, agriculture or commercial / industrial users who operate ORVs for farming/business purposes.

The campfire ban remains in effect for the entire East Kootenay. NO WOOD BURNING CAMPFIRES ARE ALLOWED. Propane fit pits must be ULC and CSA approved and the flame height must not exceed 15cm.

Heads up, Crowsnest Pass — we've moved from a Fire Advisory to a Fire Restriction, effective 9:00 a.m. today, July 29, 2026.

Dry conditions and increasing fire danger in our area are behind the change.

Not allowed:
🚫 Any open burning on private land
🚫 Fireworks and exploding targets

Still allowed:
✅ Backyard fire pits with screens
✅ Propane fire pits and gas-powered appliances
✅ Charcoal and wood-burning devices with an on/off switch (barbecues, smokers, stoves)
✅ Indoor wood fires
✅ Open flame oil devices

Please note: this notice applies only to the urban service area

This Fire Restriction applies to the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass urban service area only. Our municipal boundary is much larger and includes areas surrounded by the Calgary Forest Area, which issues its own fire restrictions.

If you're visiting Chinook Lake, Atlas, Knowles, or Sartoris staging grounds — or other areas outside the urban service area — check the Calgary Forest Area's current restrictions instead. View the boundary map and current status at albertafirebans.ca.

This will stay in place until conditions improve or further escalation is needed. Please help keep our community safe this summer.
