*Overview of International Women’s Day 2026:*

International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 is observed on Sunday, March 8, 2026—as it is every year. It’s a globally recognized day set by the United Nations to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality.

In countries like Sierra Leone, March 8 is a public holiday, and because 2026 falls on a Sunday, some workplaces and schools may observe Monday, March 9, 2026 as the official day off.

*What Is International Women's Day?*
International Women’s Day is a global day to:
▪︎ Recognize and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
▪︎ Raise awareness of ongoing challenges—including gender inequality, discrimination, and barriers to justice and opportunity.
▪︎ Call for action toward gender equality, women’s rights, and inclusive societal progress.

It originated in early 20th-century labour and women’s rights movements and has been marked internationally since the United Nations formally endorsed it in 1977.

*The 2026 Theme*
The overarching theme is *"Give to Gain"* associated with International Women’s Day 2026 . This theme highlights the importance of investment, support, mentorship, and shared progress, emphasizing that when society actively supports women’s education, leadership, and opportunities, everyone benefits.

Different organisations may frame specific aspects of the theme. Some focus on empowerment and shared growth, while others, like the United Nations, may highlight related priorities such as: *Rights, Justice, Action For All Women and Girls”*
within legal and social systems.

*How is International Women's Day Celebrated?*
Activities around* International Women’s Day vary widely across the world and include:
• Community events, conferences, and panel discussions on women's leadership, rights, and achievements.
• Rallies, marches, and public awareness campaigns advocating for equality and justice.
• Educational programs and workshops in schools, universities, and workplaces.
