For our beloved common loons, the leading cause of death is ingesting lead-based fishing tackle.

Fish Lead Free is an Ontario-wide movement to spread awareness about the harmful impact of lead tackle and promote safer, lead-free alternatives that protect our waters and the species that call them home. By signing the petition you are asking the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to ban the sale and use of lead sinkers, weights & jigs under 50 grams (1.75 oz) in weight, and any lead-headed tackle under 6.5cm (2.5”) in length.

So please take a moment to sign the petition if you are passing by Main Dock, Lakeline Lodge, Kelsey’s, Athens Hardware & Blanchard’s Garage this Labour Day weekend. Help us to Get the Lead Out of Charleston Lake !

CLA nabs global recognition !
As many of you know, photographer, Joshua Burch has been documenting our loon nesting raft program for the past few years.
The work he did for CLA was submitted to Bird Photographer of the Year, a global competition run out of the UK, and he won the award for Conservation Documentary!
CLA board member Dwayne Struthers was featured in a four page montage showing all the work that he and volunteers: Jeff Roddick (who is also integral to the loon raft program), Katie Baker & Bill Hallam (who assist in our loon surveys) do to preserve and enhance the loon population on Charleston Lake.
Thank you to Dwayne, Jeff, Katie and Bill for all of your hard work!
And of course, thank you to Joshua for the amazing photos that document those efforts and are featured in this book!

Thanks to all those who attending CLA's 136th Annual General Meeting this past Saturday. A special thanks to our MP, Michael Barrett , Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke and Councillors Angela Kelman - Councillor Ward 2, Leeds and the Thousand Islands & Monique Antoine-Hartley for your presence and ongoing support.
Many people have heard of lyme disease but this is not the only disease that is carried by ticks in eastern Ontario. Our keynote speaker, Shelley Ball, Phd explained that while 68% of ticks carry Lyme bacteria, 40% carry Babesia odocoilei which can lead to far more serious health issues. We'll be posting her complete presentation on our website which includes tips for prevention and treatment.
