As the Marriage Equality Case is heard at the Gaborone High Court on 22–23 October 2026, AGANG Community Network stands in solidarity with everyone organising for equality, dignity, and justice.

Building a movement means recognising that our liberation is interconnected. We call on families, allies, civil society organisations, and fellow movements to stand together, amplify the call for marriage equality, and challenge discrimination wherever it exists.

Let us show up in solidarity, speak out for equality, and build a Botswana where everyone belongs. No one should have to fight for their rights alone.

Agang Community Network Director, Seipone Boitshwarelo, says there are concerns and differing views among Dikgosi regarding marriage equality, LGBTIQ+ rights and gender equality.

He shared with Duma FM News that during their ongoing engagements with Dikgosi in Palapye, some are not in support of same s*x marriage, for they believe it goes against religious teachings.

She added that some say they were not aware of the developments surrounding the decriminalisation of same-s*x intimacy as pronounced by the apex court.

Dialogue with Dikgosi on 🏳️‍🌈Rights…Marriage and Equality..Pride 🏳️‍🌈

Today, I had the opportunity to meet with the Dikgosi at the Main Kgotla to discuss issues that are currently affecting our communities, including the ongoing marriage equality case, Pride, and human rights. We were also grateful to have the support and presence of religious leaders in this engagement.

The conversation was important and, at times, difficult. It became clear that there are concerns and differing views around marriage equality, LGBTIQ+ rights, and gender equality. Some of the Dikgosi expressed that they are not in support of these issues, which reminded me of just how important dialogue, information-sharing and creating spaces for honest conversation remain.

Our initial intention was to have a series of dialogues across different quarters, engaging directly with communities. However, given the concerns raised, we agreed that the first step should be to have a training with the Dikgosi themselves.

For me, this is still a positive step forward. We cannot have meaningful community engagement without first creating opportunities to listen, learn and address some of the gaps in understanding. We are therefore looking forward to the training, after which we hope to re-engage with the Dikgosi about having dialogues within their respective quarters.

Change takes time, and sometimes the first step is simply creating a space where difficult conversations can begin. Today was one of those steps.

This Heritage Weekend, we celebrate 22 years of Soweto Pride and the continued work of building communities where LGBTIQ+ people can live with dignity, freedom and equality.

AGANG Community Network is proud to support FEW (Forum for the Empowerment of Women) and to be part of the Soweto Pride March today, 25 September 2026, as we come together to honour our heritage, our communities and the generations who have fought for freedom.
