What is Trauma-Sensitive Facilitation?
Many people hear the word trauma and immediately think about therapy. But
trauma-sensitive facilitation is something different.
It is an approach to facilitating groups that recognizes that every participant brings unique life
experiences into the learning environment. Some may have experienced adversity, stress,
loss, discrimination, or other challenging events that influence how they engage,
communicate, and learn.
Being trauma-sensitive does not mean treating participants as fragile or avoiding difficult
conversations. It means creating learning spaces where people feel psychologically safe,
respected, and included.
A trauma-sensitive facilitator:
✔ creates predictable and well-structured activities
✔ communicates with respect and without judgment
✔ offers choices instead of pressure
✔ recognizes signs of stress or overwhelm
✔ maintains clear and consistent boundaries
✔ supports participation without forcing vulnerability
The goal is simple: to create conditions where everyone has the opportunity to learn,
participate, and grow safely.
Because when people feel safe, they are more likely to engage, connect, and learn.

🚀 S.A.F.E. YOUTH Officially Begins!

On 3rd April 2026, representatives of the S.A.F.E. YOUTH partnership gathered in Sofia, Bulgaria, for the project's Kick-Off Meeting.

Partners from Germany, Bulgaria, and Italy came together to launch a 15-month cooperation dedicated to strengthening the capacity of youth workers to support trauma-affected and marginalized young people through Trauma-Sensitive Facilitation (TSF).

During the meeting, partners discussed:
✔ Project objectives and expected results
✔ Creation of the online certification course
✔ Roles, responsibilities, and timeline
✔ Dissemination and sustainability strategy

This meeting marks the beginning of an exciting journey towards creating safer, more inclusive, and supportive environments for young people across Europe.

Together, we are building tools that empower youth workers to respond with understanding, empathy, and confidence.

🇪🇺 S.A.F.E. YOUTH is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. Through this support, the project will contribute to improving the quality of youth work and promoting inclusion, well-being, and equal opportunities for young people across Europe.

The poster presents the 6 Pillars of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC), which support youth workers in creating emotionally safer, more inclusive, and supportive environments for young people.

The pillars focus on:
• Safety
• Trustworthiness & Transparency
• Peer Support
• Collaboration & Mutuality
• Empowerment, Voice & Choice
• Cultural, Historical & Gender Awareness

Trauma-sensitive youth work is not about acting as therapists. It is about understanding how stress, trauma, exclusion, and emotional experiences may influence participation, behavior, trust, and communication — and responding with greater empathy, reflection, and emotional awareness.

Even small changes in communication, structure, participation, and group dynamics can make a significant difference in how safe and included young people feel.

The poster was created to raise awareness on trauma-informed youth work as part of the project “Restoration – The Courage is Personal but Support is Collective”, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

We are happy to share our new manual on Trauma-Informed Youth Work, created during the training course “Restoration – The Courage is Personal but Support is Collective”, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

The manual combines theory and practice, including:
• trauma-informed facilitation methods;
• practical non-formal education activities;
• grounding and regulation techniques;
• case studies and good practices;
• understanding fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses;
• emotional safety and burnout prevention for youth workers.

The resource was developed collaboratively by youth workers and facilitators from different European countries with the aim of supporting safer, more inclusive, and psychologically aware youth work practices.
