Calling all VCE students looking to boost your study and exam preparation skills 📚

Our partners at Australian Catholic University (ACU) are once again offering a series of free online VCE Unit 4 Exam Revision Workshops, designed to help Year 12 students prepare for their upcoming exams.

Running from 21–24 September 2026, the workshops include Q&A sessions and student resource booklets, with sessions across a wide range of subjects including English, Maths, Biology, Business Management, Physical Education and Health & Human Development.

Year 11 students — there’s something for you too! ACU is also hosting a free Year 11 Study Skills Webinar with Dr Luke Rowe on Monday 28 September, 10.00–11.15am. The session will share practical strategies to help students prepare for Year 12, covering motivation, effective study, managing distractions and procrastination, goal setting, feedback and navigating AI in their studies. Teachers and parents are also welcome to attend.

Whether you’re heading into your final VCE exams or preparing for Year 12, these free sessions are a fantastic opportunity to build confidence, strengthen your study skills and feel more prepared for what’s ahead.

Earlier this month, we had the opportunity to attend the National Conference for Regional, Rural and Remote Education and the Regional University Study Hubs Symposium.

It was a fantastic few days connecting with passionate people from universities, study hubs, schools, government and student communities across Australia, all with a shared commitment to ensuring that where a student lives does not limit what they can achieve.

We heard about the incredible work happening across the country, exchanged ideas and had important conversations about how we can continue to improve access to education and create greater opportunities for people living in regional, rural and remote communities.

A highlight was also the opportunity to present alongside Federation University, sharing teaching and student perspectives from the Bachelor of Nursing program being delivered in a rural health setting here in Wonthaggi. Developed in response to local workforce needs and supported by program partners including Bayside Health, it was wonderful to share this local example with colleagues from across Australia.

Small town. Big impact. 🧡

These are some of the numbers we’re incredibly proud of. But behind every one of them is a person choosing to take the next step in their education, right here in our region.

In Semester 1, 2026, 193 students registered with CUC Bass Coast, studying across 17 different areas through 40 education providers.

Some are studying full-time. Others are balancing study with work, family and community commitments. They’re working towards qualifications in health, education, business, community services and many other fields, all while staying connected to the places they call home.

Since our learning community opened, 616 students have registered to access free local study spaces, reliable internet, technology and support. Every registration represents someone taking the next step in their education without having to leave our beautiful region.

We’re even prouder of what these numbers represent: opportunity, connection, and a stronger future for our community. And that impact cannot be measured.

At the recent Bass Coast College Speed Career Conversations Day, we caught up with Roslyn from Australian Catholic University (ACU) and Belle, a former Bass Coast College student who is now in her first year at ACU.

Roslyn works in ACU’s Equity and Inclusion team, helping to widen participation in higher education by connecting regional students with current university students who come from similar communities to help them understand the experience of studying from a regional area.

Belle was one of the first students to take part in the program when she was in Year 9 at Bass Coast College. She later participated in ACU’s Step Up program, which provided her with guaranteed entry into her tertiary course.

Today, Belle is studying Human Rights and Law (Terrorism & Security) at ACU, and returned to Bass Coast College to share her experience with the year 9 students.

“I like all of the classes, and there are lots of people who are there to help and make sure you thrive. Everyone wants you to succeed. It’s not as scary as people make it out to be,” Belle said. “It’s a full-circle moment being able to give back to the community in this way.”

Belle has also recently registered with us at CUC Bass Coast and is looking forward to having a dedicated, focused place to study locally.

Her journey is a great example of what’s possible for regional students: you can live locally, stay connected to your community and still pursue tertiary education.

Partnerships, like the one we have with ACU, are an important part of making that possible. By working together with universities, schools and our local community, we can help create clearer pathways and ensure regional students have the support they need to succeed.

Census reminder!

Make sure you complete the 2026 Census next Tuesday, 11 August.

At CUC, we rely on Census data to advocate for better access to education, stronger regional investment, and the services that help you study well – from digital connectivity to local infrastructure and community support.

When regional students complete the Census, it gives decision-makers the evidence they need to improve opportunities for people studying outside major cities.

It helps highlight the realities of regional learners, strengthens the case for funding and support, and ensures communities like ours aren’t overlooked.

It was great to speak with Sarah Lawless last week at the Bass Coast College Speed Career Conversations for year 9 students.

Sarah is the Executive Officer at the South Gippsland Bass Coast Local Learning & Employment Network, one of our key widening participation partners. SGBCLLEN help to create opportunities for young people in the region to explore the many possibilities available to them after secondary school.

Students heard from people across a diverse range of industries, including our very own Widening Participation Officer Jarryd Blair, and Student Ambassadors Grace, Kasey and Macy, who shared their own tertiary education journeys.

Conversations like this demonstrate that there’s no one path to success and show local young people that it's possible to live and study locally while pursuing their goals.
