The WA Gould League (operators of Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre) was formed in 1939 with Charles Hadley, who was at that time the Director of Education, as its first President. Membership rose quickly and over 18,000 school students became members by 1955. Today, the WA Gould League continues to maintain a strong relationship

with Catholic, Independent and Department of Education schools, with over 7500 students annually experiencing its environmental education programs. The environmental education experiences provided by the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre are continually reviewed to keep pace with current educational initiatives.

Then join us for an all-ages, FREE nature themed trivia afternoon to get you prepped and excited for WA Gould League's 2026 Quenda Count!!

Join us on the 19th of September for an afternoon of engaging trivia and find out how you can take part in some seriously cool citizen science in this year’s WA Gould League Quenda Count. Come by yourself or grab your family and friends and make up a table.

There will be prizes for the best wildlife themed costumes! 🐨🐝🦘🦋🦉🐞

Have you heard about the 2026 Quenda Count? Join the WA Gould League and help protect one of WA’s favourite native mammals!

This October, residents across Western Australia are invited to take part in the 2026 Quenda Count, a community citizen science project coordinated by the WA Gould League in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions (DBCA).

The count aims to gather valuable information about the distribution and activity of quendas (southwestern brown bandicoots) in suburban gardens, parks and bushland reserves. By recording signs such as diggings, tracks and direct sightings, community members can help scientists and local governments better understand how quendas use urban habitats and where conservation efforts should be focused.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED?

• Register for 2026 Quenda Count on our website, or via email at [email protected]
• Taking part in the Quenda Count is fun and easy; choose a site, plan your survey days/times in advance, and simply count how many quendas you saw and how long you spent looking.
• You can keep an eye out for quendas while on a regular bush-walk, while doing some gardening, or while simply enjoying a cuppa on your verandah!
• Record your observations on the online survey form found at https://www.wagouldleague.com.au/quenda-count or fill out a paper survey form and submit via email at [email protected] or the P.O. Box listed on the sheet.

🐢 GOOD NEWS STORY 🐢

Lots of people have been following along with the recent turtle hatchling drama at the Discovery Centre, where a section of the lawn has been cordoned off to protect our tiny residents.

A couple of weeks ago, some visiting students accidentally uncovered two turtle hatchlings while aquatic scooping. Imagine our surprise when two little snouts popped out of the sand! Sam was quick to cover the site with mesh and add cones to keep the area safe.

A week later, two more turtles were spotted poking out of a NEW section of the mesh. But several days passed, and they still hadn’t fully emerged. We were starting to get a little concerned! More barriers went up to protect them from harm, while we crossed our fingers and hoped to avoid intervention.

But good news! The rain over the weekend seems to have given the sand a helping hand, and we’re delighted to announce the arrival of triplets! 🐢🐢🐢

All three made their way into the lake and will hopefully go on to thrive. Three cheers for our tiny turtle trio!

We’re thrilled to announce that the wonderful Frané Lessac will be making a special guest appearance at this Saturday’s Bookworms event! The internationally renowned author and illustrator will be reading from several of her books, including ‘A is for Australian Animals’, ‘The Big Book of Australian Nursery Rhymes’ and ‘Australian Baby Animals’.

There may also be opportunities during the morning for book signings and a chat with Frané!

Round Table Presentation: Nature journalling as an educational tool to promote two-way science in a biodiversity garden
Dr Kim Lapere, Education Officer at Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre WA Gould League

Dr Kim Lapere is an Australian artist, scientist, educator and naturalist. Kim shares her adventures and nature journaling to inspire everyone to go outdoors, explore and learn more about the world around them. Her hope is that by connecting more with nature we will make a positive difference towards conserving our planet and life on it, in addition to our own wellbeing. Kim is also the Education Officer at The Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre operated by WA Gould League, a local not-for-profit organisation. The centre is located at the southern end of Herdsman Lake or Noogenboro, and is a unique place for schools, community groups and the public to reconnect with nature.
