National Volunteer Week – 18–23 May 2026

It’s time to recognise and celebrate our incredible community volunteers!

Running from 18 - 23 May 2026, National Volunteer Week shines a light on the more than 27,000 volunteers in the Queensland Fire Department. These dedicated individuals serve across the Rural Fire Service Queensland and Queensland Fire and Rescue as volunteer firefighters, scientific officers, peer support officers, search and rescue dog handlers, admin support officers, and chaplains.

This week is all about thanking our volunteers for their time, effort, and commitment in supporting their peers and communities in ANY role. Take a moment to reflect on the immense contributions they make and the invaluable role they play with Queensland communities.

Volunteers truly make a difference – why not get involved?!🔥

With a dangerous fire season on the horizon, now’s the perfect time to tidy up your home and property.

A Fire Permit is required for any fire larger than 2 metres in any direction. You can download a digital 'Application for Permit to Light' form from the Queensland Fire Department to complete prior to contacting the Fire Warden.

On Saturday, 25 April 2026, Australians and New Zealanders came together for Dawn Services across the country to mark the 111th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings and honor all who have served in the Armed Forces.

Our Brigade members took part in an ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Verrierdale Hall, commencing at sunrise to reflect the timing of the original Gallipoli landing. The service featured the Last Post, two minutes of silence, the Reveille, bagpipe laments, choral performance by the Noosa Chorale, prayers, and readings from ex-serving Defence members and a young Verrierdale local, all paying tribute to the ANZAC values of courage, mateship, and sacrifice.

The Service was led by our First Officer, Duncan Hall-Brown with Wreath-laying ceremonies by Brigade members Shawn Fitz-Gerald for All Returned Soldiers, and Andy Barry on behalf of the Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade.

A gunfire breakfast was served in the hall immediately following the Service and was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

On Tuesday, 10 March 2026, the VRFB joined forces with the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade (ERFB) for a joint training session focused on in-depth discussions about real-life fire scenarios and the dangers they pose.
Held at the ERFB’s Fire Sheds, the session was a fantastic opportunity for VRFB crews to meet ERFB members and share valuable knowledge and experiences. These sessions are crucial for building strong working relationships between brigades, which ultimately make the fireground safer and more secure when things get tough.
Everyone enjoyed the session and sets the stage for more joint training in the future, with the next one planned with the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade.
A big thanks to ERFB for hosting us!🔥

Our Brigade conducted a stack burn as the request of a property owner in Verrierdale on Tuesday 10 February 2026. Our members took the opportunity to use this burn as a training exercise to maintain their firefighting skills and proficiency.

Whilst the stack burned fiercely at first, it unfortunately died down due to it being fairly green with too much growth achieving only around a 50% success. However our crew did well and the property owner was very happy with the outcome🔥

It's been a busy start to 2026 for the Brigade with both call outs and our usual continuous training.

On Wednesday, 21 January, we responded to reports of a dumped mattress on fire at the corner of Verrierdale and Doonan Bridge Roads (North) but nothing was found.

On Sunday 1 February we responded to 70 metre long roadside grass fire allegedly sparked by a firecracker. A quick response saw the fire extinguished within 20 minutes of us arriving on scene.

Today, Thursday 5 February, we teamed up with a crew from the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade (DRFB) to help extinguish a tree-lined half acre paddock from an unsupervised stack burn. Some photos from the scene are attached. A huge thanks to DRFB for their assistance! (Photo credit: Andy Barry VRFB).

🚨In 2026, we will face the first real fire danger season in six years, so residents are encouraged to get ready and stay prepared. Helpful resources can be found below.

Residents are reminded that a Fire Permit is required for any fire larger than two metres in ANY direction. Permits are FREE and can be requested using the link 'Fire bans and Fire Permits' below⬇️

In an emergency, CALL TRIPLE 000 immediately.

The Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred on Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends and everyone affected by this extremely tragic event.

The Brigade wishes to spread some festive cheer by wishing the local community a Merry Christmas and a fantastic 2026! 🎅Throughout the holiday season, the Brigade remains on standby, ready to support the community in the event of fires, storms, or floods🔥💦🌳

Please remember that we’re still in a heightened state of bushfire risk. Recently, we were called to a fire on a forested hill next to a timber house and deck which was left unattended. This fire could have ended in disaster if our crew hadn’t attended to it quickly. Another recent incident involved the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade who responded to a large stack burn at a residential property that spread rapidly damaging nearby property. The resident had not obtained a Fire Permit to light this fire. So when enjoying a festive feast involving a BBQ or any open flame; DO NOT leave it unattended. Do not be complacent. Fires spread quickly🔥

Residents are reminded that a permit is needed for any fire larger than two metres in any direction. Permits are free and can be obtained through the Queensland Fire Department. Fire Permit link is included below⬇️

⛈️The storm season has well and truly arrived in SEQ and the devastating storm on 24 November is a stark reminder of the importance of being prepared, including keeping a good alternate supply of drinking water in case of a power outage. Around 89,000 properties lost power across SEQ during this storm, affecting both telecommunications and water supplies.

Our Brigade recently assisted both the Peregian Springs and Verrierdale communities with clearing roads and pathways of fallen trees and debris on the night of this storm. We are not all about fires! We continue to be on stand-by for the community throughout our busiest period through the storm and fire season.

Here are some tips for power outages;
- Keep freezer and refrigerators closed.
- Only use a generator OUTDOORS and away from windows.
- Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from any electrical surges.
- Have alternative plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

Stay safe, check on your neighbours and don't forget to stock extra torch batteries and have generators ready and on stand-by.
And remember; IF ITS FLOODED, FORGET IT💦

On Monday, 24 November 2025, we had two crews out in the Community working hard to clear fallen trees from roads and footpaths, after a catastrophic storm tore through the Sunshine Coast and SEQ.

It was a wild night, with huge trees torn from the ground by fierce winds, heavy rain, and hail. Crews cleared fallen trees from The Avenue, Brindabella Avenue, Swift Avenue, and Peregian Springs Drive in Peregian Springs. More uprooted trees were removed from Sudholz and Pryor Roads in Verrierdale with two big trees found and cleared on Dahlia Road by chance as our crews headed back to the Fire Station.

Our chainsaws certainly got a good workout! A huge thanks to our crew members involved on this very stormy night🍃 More storms are expected in the next few days so be sure to follow any warnings and stay safe!

🚨For life-threatening emergencies, call TRIPLE ZERO (000)🚨
