WE SWIM recognises that people from multicultural communities can face different barriers to participating in swimming and water safety education. Through funding, partnerships and community-led solutions, the program is working to create more inclusive pathways to water safety.

With grants now open across five opportunities, organisations and community leaders can help make a practical difference.

Applications close 24 September 2026. Outcomes will be notified from 16 October 2026.

The Royal Life Saving Hydrotherapy Rescue Award has been updated in partnership with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).

The refreshed online learning includes new content on client screening, aquatic risk assessment and physiotherapy-specific conditions including epilepsy, diabetes and bariatric care, along with the management of suspected spinal injury in the water.

Combining online modules with a practical session in hazard identification, aquatic rescue, and basic life support, the award is the minimum standard for physiotherapists and allied health assistants working in hydrotherapy settings.

The voices and experiences of multicultural communities are central to WE SWIM.

The National Multicultural Community Advisory Group is helping shape the program through community-led advice so swimming and water safety activities are culturally safe, relevant and accessible for multicultural communities by identifying barriers, recommending practical solutions and strengthening links with local pools, swim schools, clubs, councils, settlement services and education providers.

A more connected approach means more opportunities for communities to build confidence and stay safe around water.

Registrations are NOW OPEN for the National Aquatic Infrastructure Symposium.

Held in Adelaide on 7-8 October, the Symposium will combine a behind-the-scenes look at Adelaide’s changing aquatic landscape with a national working forum focused on the future of Australia’s public aquatic infrastructure.

Day 1 will feature facility tours of the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre, Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre, and renovation and retrofit works at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre, with participants hearing directly from asset owners, planners and designers involved in these projects.

Day 2 will bring together leaders from government, local councils, aquatic operations, planning, design, engineering and research to examine the evidence, investment decisions, operating models, planning approaches and emerging technologies shaping the future of community pools.

The Symposium will culminate in a facilitated national workshop focused on one shared goal: building a national plan to save community pools.
