Major renewable gas win for regional NSW: Congratulations to Optimal Renewable Gas (Optimal Group) for securing a Low Carbon Product Manufacturing Grant to accelerate the development of its $58 million Griffith Biohub. The Griffith Biohub is a circular economy project that will implement proven anaerobic digestion technology to convert the under-utilised resource of agricultural organic waste and residues across the Riverina to biomethane (a low-emission renewable gas). Biomethane can be delivered via existing infrastructure to increase domestic gas supply and accelerate the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors in NSW, such as industrial heat, chemical feedstocks and responsive power generation.

The Griffith Biohub will process up to 100,000 tonnes of organic waste in its first phase to produce approximately 460TJ/year, as well as recovering and returning the residual nutrients back to agriculture. The project is due to commence construction in late 2026 and commercial operations in 2028.

The Griffith Biohub is being accelerated by a NSW Low Carbon Product Manufacturing Grant designed to support investment in industrial facilities and advanced manufacturing capabilities to help decarbonise the NSW economy.

Congratulations also to the other major stakeholders in this project, Jemena, Baiada Poultry and Osaka Gas Australia Pty Ltd (OGA).
