Please note there are no bike shops listed in Toowoomba.

How e-bike riders are expected to get their bikes checked is not the least bit clear if there are no shops here prepared to do the work imposed on us all.

One bike shop owner here has already stated he has no interest in becoming a checking station and having to deal with customers who he has told have illegal bikes. A perfectly reasonable view to take in the circumstances.

From 1 July 2026, e-bikes used in public in Queensland must meet EN 15194 or EPAC Assurance Scheme safety requirements.

Almost an octogenarian.... just back from not one but two cycling holidays, Sth. Korea and Japan, in time to lead two days of riding in Stanthorpe and now off for Masters netball games in Brisbane.

Final day of the Central West NSW cycle trip. Dunnedoo to Mendooran.
Rod and Graham shared the driving of the support vehicle today, resulting in each riding 32km.

We had had a succulent Chinese dinner at the Dunnedo Sports club on our last night, each of our chosen dishes having a commendable amount of veggies!
It had been a clear warm night when we settled into the tents. However through the night a massive thunderstorm settled over the top of the Caravan Park and filled Rod’s tent with water. Again. So Rod was the first to be up and packed!

Another nice day riding through farm land with fields of canola and oats stretching out.

We cycled from Dunedoo to Mendooran to complete the CW loop by a couple of differing gravel/bitumen of routes. Once arriving at Mendoran, we redistributed and loaded up the gear and bikes, then headed to the cafe/bakery for a pie and a cold drink before heading north towards home and into the rain.

On our entire trip we had been quite fortunate with the weather, avoiding Toowoomba’s rain. As we had progressed further south through NSW the scenery gradually changed and non-irrigated greenery appeared.

All riders agreed it had been a fantastic trip with marvellous scenery, fine riding, and great company.

So, who failed on the legislation originally that has allowed this situation to occur?

Who let in non-conforming e-bikes?

Who allowed dodgy batteries to be imported?

Who took far too long to stop imports?

Have they been stopped?

A government-funded study into e-mobility use in Queensland has found there are close to 1 million privately owned devices.

Day 15 of the Central West NSW Cycle trip and day 5 on the Central West. Cycle Trail from Gulgong to Dunnedoo 52 kilometres.

Last night David Allworth who rode over from Mudgee to join us for dinner pointed out an alternative path on the trail to Dunedoo. This path is listed as an adventure trail as it is a bit more challenging but it had the advantage of being a few kilometres shorter and dodging all the traffic on the original route.

The photos tell the tale.

Although it was rough in places it was still a very doable trail and fun to ride.

Before we left Gulgong we took in some of the history. The old houses and shops with all the roses add a real charm to the place.

We rode up to Red Hill the site of the early gold mining. Rode down to look at the Henry Lawson statue.

After visiting the bakery for coffee and a lamington and stocking up on apple pies for smoko we wandered over to the pioneer museum and spent 1.5 hours perusing a collection that we could have spent all day looking at.

Finally we set off for a 52 kilometre ride.
The scenery was changing with fields of crops and scrubby country..

We are all glad it was Dave’s turn to drive his ute through the rough roads and through the washed out gullies.

Rolling into Dunnedoo you can’t miss the silo art of Winx and her jockey who grew up here.

Another great day and our second last on the trail before heading home.
