Elder abuse is often hidden, but its impact can be devastating.

Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we stand with older Australians and reaffirm our commitment to dignity, safety, independence and respect.

Awareness matters. Action matters more.

Every provider, worker, family member and community member has a role to play in recognising, preventing and responding to elder abuse.

Older people have the right to live free from abuse, neglect, coercion and exploitation.

If something doesn't feel right, speak up.

Today marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Elder Abuse can occur in many forms - the impact can be devastating, affecting a person’s health, wellbeing, financial security, independence and quality of life.

COTA Australia Chief Executive Officer Patricia Sparrow said elder abuse remains a significant and often hidden problem affecting older Australians across the country. “One in six older Australians experiences abuse, often at the hands of someone they know and trust,” Ms Sparrow said.

The Federal Government’s recently released National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People, providing an important framework for addressing the issue.

“A national plan sets the direction, but real progress will depend on whether it is backed by concrete action, sustained investment and clear accountability,” she said.

🃏 Seniors Sunday Session at Berry Bowling Club

We’re hoping to bring people together for a relaxed Sunday afternoon of old-school cards, conversation and connection at Berry Bowling Club.

The afternoon is especially for local seniors who may enjoy a little more company and community, but family, friends and people of all ages are very welcome.

📍 Berry Bowling Club
🕒 Sundays, 3.00–5.00 pm
🍽 Stay on for dinner afterwards if you wish

There is no cost to attend. You would only need to cover your own personal expenses if you choose to enjoy a drink or stay for dinner.

You don’t need to be an experienced card player. Come along to play, learn, teach someone else or simply enjoy the company.

Local transport can also be arranged for anyone who would like to attend but needs a little assistance getting there.

At this stage, we’re simply trying to gauge interest, so please comment below if you would be likely to attend and let us know which card games you enjoy.

A simple Sunday afternoon, with good company, connection and community at its heart.

It's about knowing who's coming to your home.

It's about having someone answer the phone when you need help.

It's about being listened to, treated with dignity and supported to continue living life your way.

At Freewave, we believe great care starts with relationships. That's why we focus on consistency, continuity and taking the time to understand what matters most to each person we support.

We welcome this announcement and applaud the Department's decision to remove co-contributions for Personal Care services from 1 October 2026.

This is a positive change that will help reduce costs for many older Australians and improve access to essential care and support.

If you would like to understand how these changes may affect your individual co-contribution arrangements, please contact our team. We're happy to help.

A major shift in how personal care is funded under Support at Home kicks in this October. We have broken down exactly what it means for older Australians and their families.
