🎶 Meet the committee 🌴

You might know SCMIC from the Sunshine Coast Music Awards, our industry events, or the work we're doing to create more opportunities for local music people… but who's actually making it all happen?

Well, here we are! 👋 A quick intro to committee members for the next 12 months.

Our committee is made up of passionate people from across the Sunshine Coast music industry who volunteer their time, skills, experience and connections to help our local scene thrive.

From musicians and broadcasters to promoters, producers and other industry professionals, we bring different perspectives to the table, but share one big goal: building a stronger, more connected and sustainable music industry on the Coast.

We're the people working behind the scenes to advocate for our industry, champion local talent, build relationships and turn ideas into real opportunities.

A new chapter for SCMIC! 🫶 As we welcome Sarah Howells as our new Chair, we’re celebrating the enormous contribution of our inaugural Chair, Melissa O’Bryan.

Melissa has been involved since SCMIC began as a Chamber of Commerce subcommittee. She helped guide our transition to an independent, incorporated organisation, shaping the rules and mission that still guide us - alongside long-standing committee exec and fellow founding member Dr Andy Ward - including dedicated committee representation for working musicians and First Nations voices.

She also chaired SCMIC through the creation of the Sunshine Coast Music Awards, returning after 19 years. Following the hardships of COVID, the awards gave our music community a much-needed chance to celebrate its talent, resilience and achievements.

Under Melissa’s leadership, and thanks to the committee’s tireless work, music was also recognised in the Regional Economic Development Plan for the first time, following research that SCMIC helped commission.

These are remarkable milestones for a volunteer-led organisation. Liss, thank you for your vision, persistence and countless hours of hard work. We’re thrilled you’ll remain on the committee, sharing your experience and passion for our local scene. ❤️

Now, a warm welcome to Sarah! 🎉

Sarah joined SCMIC in May 2024 and has served as Committee Member, Secretary and Vice Chair. Her music industry journey began at just 16, booking bands and organising all-ages gigs.
Since then, she’s worked across radio, journalism, publicity and festivals; from triple j and Double J to ABC Sunshine Coast, Woodford Folk Festival and Bluesfest. She’s interviewed artists including Mavis Staples and Ben Harper, and is writing the Blues and Roots chapter of APRA AMCOS’s upcoming "100 Years of Australian Songwriting."

Sarah brings decades of experience, deep industry connections and fresh energy, alongside a genuine commitment to grassroots music.

We can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings.

A huge thank you, Melissa, and congratulations, Sarah! Here’s to a stronger, more connected Sunshine Coast music industry. 🌴🎶

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the SCMIC AGM, caught up with our local music community and cast their vote for the year ahead.

And with that… we have some new faces to welcome!
Please join us in welcoming OJ Newcomb and Leigh Kuryj to the SCMIC Committee. 👏

We’re so excited to have their experience, ideas and perspectives around the table as we continue working to strengthen and create opportunities for the Sunshine Coast music industry.

We’re also very happy to announce Alice Jones stepping into the Vice Chair role and Sarah Howells as our new SCMIC Chair! 🎉

Sarah takes the reins from our inaugural Chair and SCMIC founding member Melissa O’Bryan, who has played an enormous role in taking SCMIC from an idea to the organisation and community it is today.

Melissa isn’t going far - we're very happy to have her remaining with us on the committee, but we want to say a massive thank you for the time, energy, leadership and heart she has poured into SCMIC over the years.

This year we also farewell two valued committee members, Professor Andy Ward and Briony Luttrell.

Andy was there from the very beginning as one of SCMIC’s founding members, helping lay the foundations for what we’ve been able to build since.

To both Andy and Briony: thank you for giving your time, knowledge and energy to our local music community and for everything you’ve contributed during your time on the committee. 🙏

There’s plenty more we want to accomplish, and we’re excited to head into the next chapter with fresh perspectives alongside the experience and passion of our continuing committee members.

Welcome OJ and Leigh, congratulations Sarah, and a huge thank you to Melissa, Andy and Briony. Here’s to another big year for music on the Sunshine Coast! 🌴🎶

📣 SCMIC AGM TOMORROW NIGHT. COME HANG WITH YOUR MUSIC COMMUNITY! 🎶

Yes, there’s some official AGM business to take care of… but it’s also a great excuse to get a bunch of our local music industry together in the same room 🤝

Come along, grab a drink and some nibbles on us, catch up with familiar faces and meet some more of the musicians, venues, promoters, managers, crew and other industry folk who make up our collective.

We’ll chat about what SCMIC has been up to, what’s ahead, and elect the committee who’ll help steer the organisation through the next year.

📣 SCMIC'S AGM IS THIS COMING TUESDAY Sep 22. If you're a member, we'd love to see you there!

If you’re planning to join us, there are a couple of important things to know before the night. 👇

You must be an SCMIC member AND RSVP to attend the AGM. Membership is free, so if you haven’t joined yet, now’s the time.

And if you want to have your say on who joins the next SCMIC Committee, you need to be there in person to vote. 🗳️

Committee nominations have now closed, and you can meet all of this year’s nominees on the SCMIC website.

We’d really encourage everyone attending the AGM to take a little time beforehand to read through their bios, learn about their experience and ideas, and get familiar with the people putting their hands up to help shape the future of our local music industry.

That way, when it comes time to vote on Tuesday night, you can make an informed choice about who you’d like representing our music community for the year ahead. 🎶
