Fire season is here, Spencer, Gunderman and Lower Mangrove. Now’s the time to get prepared and make sure you understand the requirements before lighting a fire. Please take a moment to read the RFS information below.

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

Tomorrow, Thursday 1 October, the fire danger is forecast to be HIGH. If you’re in Spencer, Gunderman or Lower Mangrove, please take a moment tonight to check your bush fire survival plan, make sure you can receive alerts, and be careful with anything that could start a fire.

1 October also marks the start of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period. If you’re planning to burn, check the current permit requirements for your property and obtain a fire permit before lighting up where one is required. A permit does not override a Total Fire Ban.

Keep an eye on the Hazards Near Me NSW app and the NSW RFS website for the latest conditions. If you see an unattended fire, call 000.

Different shed. Different truck. Same volunteer spirit. 🚒

This photo is a reminder of the people who built Spencer Brigade. They gave their time, looked after their neighbours and turned out when our community needed them.

Today’s crew carries that spirit forward. The faces and equipment may change, but the heart of this brigade remains the same.

A productive day at the Spencer Emergency helipad 🚒

Spencer has a long history, and the helipad has seen plenty of action over the years. George works tirelessly to keep this vital community resource ready when it’s needed most.

Today, Spencer Brigade was lending a hand with a pile burn, helping keep the area clear and ready for action. We’re proud to do our small bit for the community.

🔥 Another Get Ready Day done and dusted at Spencer Brigade!

A big thank you to everyone from Lower Mangrove, Spencer and Gunderman who dropped in to say hello, joined the conversation or shared our posts. Every bit of support helps us reach more people across our community.

The kids had an absolute blast playing with the wet stuff 💦🚒, and we loved meeting some new community members.

Hopefully, everyone left knowing a little more—and feeling better prepared for the fire season ahead.

Getting ready is something we all do together. ❤️💛

🔥🚒 Our littlest community members are getting ready!

Dressed as firefighters and having a go on the fire hose, the kids are learning that getting ready can be fun—and that firefighters come in all shapes and sizes! 👩‍🚒🧑‍🚒

They may be little, but they certainly know how to make a big splash! 💦🔥

Volunteer brigades are built by people who step forward when others step back, and we’re excited to see what lies ahead with Kristy Wilson taking on the role of Community Engagement Officer.

We’re proud of our history, but we’re equally excited about the future of our Brigade.

Kristy’s vision of bringing our Brigade and community closer together - as one community supporting each other, celebrating together and working together - has ignited a different kind of fire within Spencer RFB.

Because being a volunteer brigade isn’t just about responding when the pager goes off.

It’s about community.

It’s about connection.

It’s about knowing your neighbours.

It’s about people putting their hands up to make a difference.

And it’s about having good people around you to help make it happen - people like our Vice President Colin Gollege, who takes his responsibility for community events very seriously, particularly when there’s food involved. In fact, Colin has proudly accepted the unofficial role of ensuring no barbecue, morning tea or sausage sandwich is ever left long enough to go stale. 😉🥓

So stay tuned Spencer, Gunderman and Lower Mangrove.

The future is looking bright.

The kettle is on.

The barbecue will probably be lit.

Colin has already checked the menu.

And Spencer RFB is ready to take its place right where it belongs — side by side with the community it proudly serves. ❤️🚒

🏅 A Special Surprise at the Spencer RFB AGM 🏅

Last night’s AGM had a surprise in store that nobody was expecting.

We were honoured to welcome District Manager Matt O’Donnell, who took the opportunity to recognise members of Spencer RFB for their service during the 2022-2023 flood operations.

Congratulations to Matt Webster, Colin Gollege, Steven Theakstone and outgoing Captain Alison Wade on receiving a citation in recognition of their service to the community during one of the most challenging periods our area has faced.

When communities are at their most vulnerable, volunteers quietly step forward. Long hours, difficult conditions and time away from family often go unseen, but they make a real difference to the people who need help most.

While the citations recognise individual service, they also represent the spirit of volunteering that exists throughout our Brigade and community.

Congratulations to all recipients past and present on this well deserved recognition, and thank you for your commitment to serving others when it mattered most. 👏🚒🏅
