🚒 Out here, preparation is not paranoia… it is part of community life.

One of the easiest things you can do to protect your family is making sure your smoke alarms still work when you need them most.

Smoke alarms, unlike wine, do not age well over time.

Did you know that most smoke alarms have a use-by date? Some modern smoke alarms have a life-span of up to ten years and may not have a battery to change, making it easy to forget how long since they’ve been installed.

Remember to regularly clean and test your alarms, and check the use-by date to help keep track of their age.

🚨 NSW RFS Training Activity – Kariong APZ 🚨

Residents in the Kariong area may notice increased fire brigade activity on Saturday, 30 May.
The NSW RFS Central Coast Volunteer Groups 5 and 7 will be conducting a training exercise in the Kariong APZ starting from 9:00am through to approximately 4:00pm.

🔥 During the day you may see:
Fire trucks operating in the area
Water being applied into surrounding bushland
Flashing red and blue lights
Occasional use of sirens or horns

✅ Please note:
This is a planned training exercise - not a real emergency.

For everyone’s safety, we kindly ask residents to:
Keep a safe distance from training activities
Follow any directions from NSW RFS personnel on site

We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any temporary noise or inconvenience. This training helps ensure local brigades are ready for the upcoming fire season.

❄️🔥 Winter is coming… and so are the dodgy heaters, overloaded power boards and mystery electric blankets from 2007. 😅

Spencer RFB is proud to support the 2026 Winter Fire Safety Campaign by Fire and Rescue NSW to help keep our community safe during the cooler months. 🏠💡

Before you crank up the cosy this winter, here are a few important reminders:

🛏️ Heated blankets — roll them, don’t fold them, and switch them off before bed.
🔌 Don’t overload power boards or charge devices under pillows or blankets.
🔥 Keep heaters at least 1 metre away from curtains, clothes and furniture.
🍳 Stay alert in the kitchen — winter soups don’t need extra “smoke flavour.”
🚪 Make sure your family has a home escape plan.
🚨 Test your smoke alarms — working alarms save lives!

A little winter prep can stop a big winter disaster. Stay warm, stay cosy and stay fire safe this season ❤️🧯

National Volunteer Week ❤️🚒

People often picture volunteering as lights, sirens and fire trucks racing down the road.

But in a small community like Spencer, volunteering is also:

👉 cooking sausages at fundraisers
👉 turning up to training after a full day at work
👉 checking on neighbours during storms
👉 cleaning trucks
👉 sitting through meetings
👉 helping someone through a hard day
👉 dropping everything when the pager goes off
👉 and somehow still laughing together afterwards.

Spencer Rural Fire Brigade is made up of ordinary people with jobs, families, businesses, aches, pains, responsibilities and busy lives… who still choose to give their time to help protect this community.

Some are operational. Some support behind the scenes. Some are brand new. Some have served for decades.

Every single one matters.

The reality for small volunteer brigades across Australia is that communities survive because volunteers quietly keep showing up. Not for recognition. Not for glory. But because community still means something here.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is “Your Year to Volunteer” and honestly… there has never been a better time.

You do not have to be a firefighter to volunteer with the RFS. We need all kinds of people and all kinds of skills and yes… there is usually a sausage sandwich involved somewhere … if you want to know more reach out - you know where to find us!

Happy Mothers Day to all the mums in our Spencer Brigade family. ❤️

To the mothers who volunteer on the trucks, behind the scenes, at training, fundraising, catering and everything in between — thank you for everything you do for this community.

And to the families of our male volunteers… thank you too.

Because whilst our volunteers are out responding to calls, attending training, helping the community or sitting at the station waiting for the pager to go off — someone else is quietly keeping life rolling in the background.

Someone is managing the kids.
Someone is holding dinner together.
Someone is carrying the load at home without asking for recognition.

It takes a village to keep a brigade going.

Today we want to acknowledge all the mums, partners, grandmothers and families who serve quietly in the background so volunteers can serve this community out the front.

The pager might sit on one hip… but the support sits across an entire family.

From all of us at Spencer Brigade — thank you, and Happy Mothers Day. 🌹🚒

As we move into the colder months, fire agencies often see an increase in house fires as residents use their fireplaces and heaters to stay warm. With temperatures dropping and possible snow forecast across parts of the state in the coming days, it’s important you know how to stay safe.

Remember, you won’t smell smoke while you’re asleep, so make sure your bleeping smoke alarms are working. A working smoke alarm can save your life and give you and your family valuable time to escape a burning home.

🔥 St Florian’s Day – 4 May 🔥

Today we recognise St Florian’s Day — a day that means a lot to those who wear the badge and turn up when it counts.

St Florian is the Patron Saint of firefighters, and across the NSW Rural Fire Service it’s a moment to stop and acknowledge what this job really is - not just trucks and fires, but commitment, service, and each other.

It’s about:
👉 The ones who show up when the pager goes off
👉 The ones who quietly carry the load behind the scenes
👉 The ones who go above and beyond - not for recognition, but because that’s just who they are

In our brigade, we don’t always stop to say it — but today’s a good reminder.

This job isn’t easy.
It asks a lot.
And it’s built on people who give their time, their energy, and sometimes a fair bit more.

So today, take a minute.

Check in with your crew.
Acknowledge the effort.
Be proud of what you’re part of.

Because at the end of the day -
it’s not just what we do, it’s who we stand beside.

Stay safe, look after each other, and as always…
we turn up when it matters. 🔴🚒
