Massive shout out to the Dangar Island team led by Cybele Shorter who has defined, documented and delivered RFS Boat Crew & Skipper training across our entire district. A successful weekend on the water with a fresh cohort of boat crew participants and a surprise visit from our very own post-woman Jan in Marine Rescue mode to make it a multi-agency affair.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Defending your home from a bush fire is challenging, requires you to be in good health and fit with a basic understanding of fire behaviour and the right equipment.

At minimum the RFS recommends.

A hose/s (should reach around entire property)
Water supply of at least 10,000L (example water tank, dam, pool)
Petrol/diesel water pump and fuel (stored in a safe, accessible place)
Ladders (to access inside the roof)
Buckets and mops
Shovels and metal rakes

In December 2002, fire pushed into the heart of Berowra, right up to Berowra Public School, cutting the M1, the highway and the rail corridor. Since 2002, many of us have not seen a major local fire, and it shows. Before the 2019 catastrophic conditions, as local volunteers we were shocked by how many people had no plan.

This season, do not put it off. Sit down as a household and decide what you will do if a fire starts near Berowra. Having a bush fire survival plan is essential, and you can build one quickly. Start your bush fire plan today, visit myfireplan.com.au. We are here to help you if you are unsure of where to start.

The events of last week at Koolewong, could easily be replicated into our own community. We are wanting to prepare our residents, and not scare them. We love where we live. PLANING TO MAKE A PLAN, IS NOT A PLAN.

PREPARE | ACT | SURVIVE

We’ve seen the devastating impact that bush fires can have – on people, properties and communities.

It’s important you take the time now to get ready for bush fires.

It can take as little as five minutes to make your plan online. Discuss it with your family so you know what you will do in the event of a fire.

The more you prepare your home, the more likely it will survive a bush fire or ember attack. A well-prepared home is easier for firefighters to defend, less likely to put your neighbors’ homes at risk and give you greater protection if a fire threatens suddenly and you cannot leave.

TOP 5 ACTIONS TO MAKE YOUR HOME SAFER

1. Trim overhanging branches & shrubs
2. Ensure grass is mowed and clear vegetation from at least two metres around your entire home.
3. Remove material that can burn around your home. This includes things such as door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, outdoor furniture.
4. Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home.
5. Prepare a sturdy hose(s) that will reach all around your home.
