Hawdon Street
31–71 Hawdon Street, Shepparton

📣 A call to Shepparton’s Arabic-speaking community: Help protect our children’s Arabic classes
Dear parents, families and community members,
I am writing as Hussam Saraf, on behalf of my fellow Arabic teachers at the Victorian School of Languages (VSL), Shepparton Centre, to ask for your support in protecting our children’s opportunity to learn Arabic.
In previous years, we had six Arabic classes. We now have five, and another class is being considered for closure in 2027, which would leave us with only four.
VSL management has advised us that our current enrolment of 78 students across five classes is considered low for maintaining that number of classes. Head office will monitor attendance over the next five lessons and review enrolments for next year through the end of November.
The decision is not final. We still have an opportunity to influence the outcome through early enrolment and regular attendance.
We have previously lost a class amid low and delayed enrolments. When families wait until the new school year, decisions about classes and staffing may already have been made. An intention to enrol later does not appear in the numbers being assessed now.
Strong participation shows education leaders that a community needs its language program to continue and grow. When demand for Arabic falls while demand for other languages rises, available resources may be directed towards programs with stronger enrolments. Our children also deserve strong opportunities to learn their language, and our enrolment and attendance demonstrate that demand.
🌱 Why does learning Arabic matter?
Speaking Arabic at home provides a valuable foundation. Regular classes help children develop reading, writing and communication skills, understand their heritage and culture, and maintain meaningful connections with parents, grandparents and relatives.
Learning Arabic can help our children feel confident in their Arabic heritage alongside their place in Australian society. It can also broaden their future opportunities for study, employment and communication.
🎓 Arabic can also contribute to students’ VCE results
VCE Arabic can contribute to the aggregate used to calculate a student’s ATAR. Under VTAC rules, language studies receive an additional scaling adjustment of up to five points to the scaled subject score, with the amount varying according to the score.
This is not an automatic five-point addition to the ATAR itself. The final outcome depends on the student’s performance, subject combination and ATAR calculation rules.
📅 Enrolment dates for 2027:
Current students: Re-enrolment opens on 6 November 2026.
New students: Enrolment opens on 26 November 2026.
Enrolments close for both groups: 7 December 2026.
⚠️ Because enrolment numbers will be reviewed by the end of November, please enrol as soon as your enrolment window opens. Do not wait until the closing date or the new school year.
We ask every family to:
✅ Complete their children’s enrolments promptly.
✅ Support regular attendance during the remaining weeks.
✅ Encourage relatives, friends and neighbours to enrol their children.
✅ Share this message and the promotional flyers with Arabic-speaking families across Shepparton and surrounding areas.
📍 Location: Greater Shepparton Secondary College, Hawdon Street Campus
Address: 31–71 Hawdon Street, Shepparton
🕘 Classes: Saturdays, 9:00 am–12:20 pm.
🌐 Enrol online: www.vsl.vic.edu.au
Let’s act before avoidable delays cost our community another class. Fewer classes may reduce the places and learning options available to our children, and reopening a class is not guaranteed.
As Arabic teachers, we need your partnership. Every early enrolment and every day of attendance helps us make the case for keeping this opportunity available to our children.
Kind regards,
Hussam Saraf – Mr Sammy
