Good in the Hood - Building a Better Community Together

Good in the Hood - Building a Better Community Together Unlocking the power of our neighbourhood to deliver support and value back to our community.

Learning to cook in a big batch. Learning to dish up meals. Learning to clean up. Learning to write heartwarming messages. ❀️

These are all part of the experience when students from Year 5 and 6 of Drummoyne Public School visit the Together2 facility and work alongside Good in the Hood volunteers.

In our modest kitchen, food is more than a meal. It is a way to teach kindness, build community spirit, and inspire the next generation of caring citizens.

Did you know Good in the Hood delivers over 19,000 meals every year? That’s about 400 nutritious meals every week to families and individuals in our community who need a helping hand.

But the need continues to grow, and we want to reach more people.

Our current kitchen is limiting our ability to prepare more meals and safely store fresh produce. That’s why Good in the Hood and Together2 are joining forces to raise funds for a new kitchen and cool room, helping us expand our capacity and better serve our community.

We have launched our πŸŽ„Christmas RaffleπŸŽ„, with every ticket purchased helping us move closer to this goal.

🎟️ $20 for 1 ticket | $50 for 3
πŸ’° Major prize: $10,000 cash
πŸ† Plus fantastic prizes from local businesses

Buy a ticket today and help us make a bigger difference. Share this post with your family, friends and contacts. Every ticket sold brings us one step closer to a new kitchen and more meals for those who need them most.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Emma R. πŸ’™

For the past three years, Emma has been one of the incredible volunteers who helps keep Good in the Hood running. From packing meal and produce hampers, to collecting donations from our local bakery, supporting our Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) students, and lending a hand wherever it's needed, Emma is always happy to help.

But for Emma, volunteering is about so much more than delivering meals.

"I love getting to know the people we visit. We know their dogs' names, what they like to eat, and even which football team they support."

Emma knows that a friendly chat can mean just as much as the meal itself. Those small moments of connection help people feel seen, valued, and less alone.

Another reason Emma loves volunteering is the people she volunteers alongside.

"It's lovely talking to the other volunteers. They're such like-minded people, and it's great being part of a team that genuinely cares."

Thank you, Emma, for the kindness, warmth, and community spirit you bring to Good in the Hood every week. Volunteers like you make all the difference. ❀️

πŸ’› Meet Our Volunteer – Kristen, Our Resident Hairdresser & Home Cook βœ‚οΈπŸ²

For the past six years, Kristen has been generously preparing home-cooked meals for Good in the Hood, providing delicious food that so many in our community look forward to and enjoy.

But her kindness doesn't stop there. For more than two years, Kristen has also volunteered her time and professional skills as a hairdresser, providing free haircuts at our Together2 Community Day. A fresh haircut can do so much more than change someone's appearance, it brings confidence, dignity and a smile, and Kristen's warm and caring nature makes every person feel valued.

Kristen, thank you for sharing your incredible cooking, your professional skills and your generous heart. The happiness you bring through every meal you prepare and every haircut you give makes a lasting difference to our community. We're so grateful to have you as part of the Good in the Hood family. πŸ’›

We are so grateful for every volunteer who helped create moments the children will remember. πŸ’•

🍫 Why did the M&M want to go to school? Because he wanted to be a Smartie!

🐳 What would the whale eat for lunch? Fish and ships! 🐟🚒

These are just some of the delightful and sweet messages our young helpers left for our community members earlier this week when they visited us at the Together2 Centre for our Good in the Hood's Kids Holiday Programme.

We hope these little notes bring smiles and brighten the day of the families and individuals we support. πŸ’›

The kids also helped prepare 60 nutritious meals and 3 trays of muffins for our community. They spent time in the garden with our volunteers, learning about herbs, looking after the chooks and tending to the garden. 🌱

We love seeing how the kids bring so much kindness, creativity and energy to the day! A big thank you to all our volunteers who came along to lend a hand and make the day so special.

Our second Kids Holiday Programme on Thursday 16 July still has some availability β€” book now before it fills up again! Link to book is below:

βš½πŸ’™ At Good in the Hood, supporting our community comes in many different forms.

Sometimes it's providing meals and groceries. Sometimes it's helping a young person chase a dream.

Over the past year, 12-year-old Hugo volunteered with us by baking delicious treats that were sold to help fund his trip to Portugal, where he represented Australia in the IberCup youth football tournament. Along the way, he also joined our food delivery runs, seeing first-hand the difference kindness and community can make.

Hugo shared these words with us:

"It made me realise how important it is to help others when you can, and I feel lucky to have been part of it."

We're proud to have been a small part of Hugo's journey and grateful that he chose to give back while working towards his goal.

Who knows... maybe one day we'll all be cheering Hugo on as a Australia men's national soccer team at a future World Cup! πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ίβš½

Congratulations, Hugoβ€”we're excited to see where your football journey takes you next! πŸ’™
