💚 Thank You, Harvey! 💚

Last week, we celebrated Harvey, a Year 10 student from Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus, completing his Duke of Edinburgh Award programme with us.

Over nearly three years and more than 100 hours of service, Harvey became a familiar and much-loved face at our Together2 Centre. No matter the task, he always arrived with a smile, a positive attitude, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed.

Harvey's kindness, reliability, and quiet dedication have helped support countless people in our community, and we are incredibly grateful for the time and energy he has given.

Harvey, we will miss you! We are confident that your kind heart, strong work ethic, and caring nature will take you far in life. Thank you for being part of the Good in the Hood family.

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Freya, Ines, and Rebecca, three international students from China studying Social Work at Western Sydney University, to our June Community Cooking Night at the Together2 Centre.

After discovering Good in the Hood online, the three friends travelled all the way from Carlingford, a journey of around 20 kilometres and 1.5 hours on public transport, to join us in cooking meals for people in Sydney's Inner West community.

What makes this story even more special is that Rebecca had arrived in Australia from China just the day before. Rather than spending her first day settling in, she chose to dedicate it to something meaningful: helping prepare meals for people doing it tough in our community.

Acts of kindness like these remind us that compassion has no borders. No matter where we come from, we can all make a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you, Freya, Ines, and Rebecca. It was such a pleasure meeting you, and we are incredibly grateful for your kindness, enthusiasm, and willingness to serve others. We hope to see you again soon! 💚

This week is National Volunteers Week, and we want to take a moment to celebrate our incredible volunteers who give their time, kindness, and heart to support what we do.

To every volunteer who shows up, lends a hand, shares a smile, and gives so generously of themselves, you know who you are - THANK YOU. Your dedication makes a real difference, and without you, we simply could not do what we do.

We also want to sincerely thank the local businesses who continue to support us year after year. Your generosity, loyalty, and belief in our mission mean more than words can say.

Kindness is like a box of homemade brownies, you never know what shape or size it will come in, but it is always filled with sweetness.

That’s exactly what a wonderful group of Year 11 students from Newington College delivered this week: kindness in the form of 82 homemade chocolate brownies, each one baked with care, generosity, and a whole lot of chocolate.

The boys took the initiative to create and deliver these treats to the Together2 Centre for Good in the Hood, spreading joy one brownie at a time.

Thank you for reminding us that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Care matters. ❤️

Earlier this week, something truly special happened at Together2 Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre 💛

A wonderful group of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award students teamed up with volunteers from Good in the Hood to host a community dinner for local residents.

The students spent weeks planning the evening, and on the night they arrived with smiles, decorated the room, set the tables, cooked and served a delicious three-course meal, and even organised a fun game of bingo.

It was fantastic to see students from different local schools come together, collaborate, and work as a team to create such a warm and welcoming night. Every student played a part.

At Together2 and Good in the Hood, the Duke of Edinburgh programme is an important way for us to engage young people while helping them build skills through meaningful community experiences.

The best part of the night was watching students and locals sit together, share stories, laugh, and connect over dinner and bingo. It was a beautiful reminder that community, kindness, and giving back can also be a lot of fun.

What a fantastic evening at our Good in the Hood Social Cooking Night last night!

It was wonderful to see locals and businesses from across the community come together at Together2' Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre for a night of cooking, connection and giving back. A big thank you to the Balmain Rozelle Chamber of Commerce and Darlings Magazine for coordinating such a great event. We know the meals we cooked last night will bring smiles to many locals in the community today.

Good in the Hood can only do what we do because of the strong support of our local community and generous local businesses, just like the amazing people we saw last night. We hope everyone had a great time while helping create wholesome, nutritious meals that are delicious too.

🧁 Meet Miki, one of the wonderful volunteers behind Good in The Hood. 💛

Almost every Friday, Miki comes into the centre to bake fresh muffins and treats for our community. Using what we have available and in season - apples, pears, and always a little sprinkle of cinnamon, she turns simple ingredients into something special that everyone looks forward to.

Before joining Good in The Hood, Miki worked as a dental nurse, but baking has always been close to her heart. For 17 years, she baked muffins and delivered them to local businesses. Now, she brings that same passion, care, and generosity to our centre each week.

When asked why she volunteers, Miki said:

“I love the people at Good in The Hood, all the volunteers here. They are very nice and I always feel welcome, as if it was my second home.”

Volunteers like Miki are such a blessing to our organisation. Her kindness, and willingness to give her time help create the warm and welcoming community spirit that makes Good in The Hood so special. We are incredibly grateful for everything she brings, especially the muffins! 💛

A big shout out to Year 6 Balmain Public School for making and delivering these yummy homemade ANZAC biscuits, beautifully and lovingly wrapped, ready to be shared today. It’s something truly special to see these wonderful and thoughtful students putting their time, care, and heart into giving back to others. These small acts of kindness carry a big impact, and they remind us all what community spirit really looks like.

What a special night 💛

Last week, we hosted our very first Parents and Kids Social Cooking Night, and what an incredible experience it was. Families came together to cook, laugh, and give back in the most hands-on and meaningful way. This is how special memories are made.

Together, we prepared 65 nutritious meals and over 60 treats (no small effort!), with the kids bringing so much energy, enthusiasm, and those big, proud smiles that made the night even more memorable.

This is what community looks like, small hands and big hearts making a real difference, while having fun along the way.
