A good news story to finish the week as we partnered with other volunteers for a successful outcome.
A Northern Giant Petrel was rescued by Western Australian Seabird Rescue after being found exhausted on our coast. Rescuers Rachel and Damo successfully caught the Petrel in challenging conditions, as they are large, powerful birds and dangerous to handle.
It was transported to the WA Wildlife where it received fluids, blood testing and supportive care. On admission, he was very thin and depleted, and was started on a carefully managed plan to help rebuild his strength. The Petrel was then fostered to wildlife carer Renee who maintained its demanding feeding routine until fully rehabilitated.
Giant Petrels need to be released offshore where there are sufficient winds, and we were glad to assist by giving it a ride out to sea, along with rescuers Rachel and Damo and career Renee who got to see the results of all their work, and it again roams the Southern Ocean.
You can find out more about supporting these organisations at https://wasr.org.au/ and https://wawildlife.org.au/ which rely on donations to continue their great work.
