Greyhound Adoptions WA

Greyhound Adoptions WA We rehome ex-racing and surrendered greyhounds in and around Perth, Western Australia. We never say no. Toni Donnelly our chairperson took over the role 2007.

As a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation, the primary mission of Greyhound Adoptions WA is to rescue and re-home greyhounds. No dog is given up on however long it takes every greyhound deserves a chance of a good family life! Greyhound Adoptions WA has been in operation over 15 years. It started out as a one-person operation with only four or five dogs in foster homes. Now we have between f

orty and fifty dogs in homes across Perth metro and South West region. There was a realisation that there were many Greyhounds that needed homes after finishing racing and there were not enough places for them to go. At this time, it was still acceptable to the industry to euthanase the dogs if homes could not be found. Sadly, at this time trainers were even able to put dogs down for lack of track performance. We never had the opportunity to try and find homes for many of these dogs. Thankfully through advocacy groups they now must now be re-homed. Toni’s first foster dog was Clover and she decided to adopt her - GAWA’s first foster fail! At the very beginning there were only a few members, some stayed, and some moved on due to personal circumstances. Pete, Ellen, Roz, Kristine and Sharon joined Toni and with their passion the group slowly started to grow. These members are still very much part of the ever-growing team. Many of us remember the days when there were no homes to be had for these beautiful dogs and there were many stressful times with the team ending up with the dogs in their own homes if foster homes could not be found! Eventually more members came on board and the load was shared but the bulk of the work was done by Toni as the foster coordinator. Toni found homes for dogs which took hours of work, liaising with trainers, arranging vet appointments, transport of the dogs and finding homes for these dogs. We had a Treasurer, Secretary, Events Coordinator, Adoption coordinator, help transporting dogs even a page to name some the few roles that came available and were eventually filled. Today we have a committee of 10 people, Toni has help with her foster Care Coordinator role, Five Adoption Coordinators included is our Cat Assessment Coordinators, Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising Team, Social Media Team including both Facebook and Instagram. The team also includes behaviour and food related Advisors, Transport Coordinator and Volunteers. Our group is driven by love and determination to help as many greyhounds find homes as we are able. We give credit to Toni for inspiring us all even when the chips were down in the early days to keep going – the dogs need us! GAWA has grown into this wonderful organisation full of people of every age, workers, retirees, students who have given us their skills and talents to succeed. We have many more wonderful supporters who donate their time making things for us to sell and assisting at events. We have wonderful foster carers who give so much of their time and love to the dogs and the adopted families who keep in touch and come to our events. There is so much more to say and there is always more to do! Everyone is valued the same and we all give what we can every bit of help is so appreciated. So, if you would like to get involved and join our GAWA family please get in touch we are always in need of volunteers, foster carers and help with behind-the-scenes work.

🐾 New foster home required for Sammy 🐾

Eight year old Sammy is a very affectionate, gentle boy who loves his walks, but with arthritis, needs restricted exercise. He requires regular medications to help manage his discomfort.

He has lived with foster carers with and without a dog and he copes well in either situation. He also has stayed with other gentle greyhounds without issue. He would do well with a quieter hound given his arthritis.

Sammy can stay home alone with another dog for company during a work day but would need someone home more often than not if he is to be the only dog in the home.

Sammy does have some resource guarding when it comes to food, so we recommend a home with teenagers. He will bench surf and steal food, given the opportunity!

If you can give Sammy a new home, please contact us on 0438 601 492

Cockburn Fur Run 2026

We had a fabulous day at 'The Fur Run', thanks to our many helpers, Trev, Juliet, Lani and Ellen. A huge thanks to the City of Cockburn for making it such a great event.

Juliet came with Ginger and Fernando. Loretta, who is fostering, Cooper had a stall at the event, so Lani looked after Cooper, a gorgeous black and white hound. Cooper is a very friendly happy hound. One of our visitors, Sandy, who lost her lovely female, was looking for a buddy for Butch, her Greyhound. We arranged a meet with Butch and we are seeing how it works out -- fingers crossed for this gorgeous boy.

We didn't have any other foster greys apart from Cooper, but we had a lot of visitors with their adopted hounds. Sophie and Jack with Sammy, Tanelle came with her hounds, and Colin came with his family all dressed up for the dress-up parade. Ali and Minas came for a visit after visiting Honeywood, with Ricky Bobby and Sheik. We had a visit from handsome Smokey, who was bought a new harness! Frank and Kristie came with Juliette and Ellesa, who was bought some gorgeous PJs. Theresa visited with Woody and Dotty, Trixie and Lola also made an appearance. Ladybug and Basil also dropped by with Anne.

All in all, a beautiful day weatherwise and a great event. Thanks to Lani and Tanelle for taking photos.

This is Joey (black houndie) with his foster sis, Daph - as you can see they are getting themselves well acquainted! 🩷

After only a few days in his new foster home, Joey has started to use the doggie flap, loves sprawling out on the couch and has a real love of stuffies! (Especially his cheese stuffie!) 🧀

Look out for Joey at our upcoming events!

Balcatta PetO Saturday 29 Aug

We had quite a nice day at Balcatta PetO. Trev, Megan and Ellen set-up, helped by our friend Cathryn who popped in with Shadow, her Greyhound, and Judith came later in the day to help pack down.

Ailish came early with foster Grey, Paige, who had a meet and greet. It looks like Paige will be adopted. 💙 Paige is a lovely friendly little Greyhound and it was a delight to have her there.

John and Trish came with big, handsome foster boy, Percy. Trish loves the big fella and Percy loves Trish, so fingers crossed for Percy. Who knows, maybe another Foster fail. 🖤

Sarah came with foster boy Joey, a big Black and White boy who is such a lovely natured boy. He has been spending his days with Sasha Greyhound now that Sarah has resumed full-time work. Joey is not good on his own, so when adopted, will need a buddy.

Tanelle came later with Ziggy and he was his usual good self.

Trev popped out and did a foster carer's property check for Dawn. Trev took food, a new collar and lead, and some worming tabs for Dawn.

A big thanks to Megan for taking photos and also Megan had made two beautiful Greyhound Coats -- a huge thanks.

🐾 PETO MANDURAH – SATURDAY 29 AUGUST 🐾

What a lovely day at PetO Mandurah! 💕 Michelle and Juliet set up and things were initially a little quiet… until Irene arrived with her stunning new coats and knitted dogs! 🧶🐶

It didn’t take long before we had hounds trying on coats, and we ended up selling 5 coats, 2 collars, 2 drink flasks and a Snoot Dog T-shirt! 🛍️🐾

We had lots of gorgeous hounds and visitors drop by throughout the day:

💙 Dez came along with Sabine after doing Park Run earlier that morning! Lucky Dez also met his potential new adopter — fingers crossed this could be the start of something special for this lovely boy! 🤞💙

💛 Cagney arrived with Christine and her daughter. He’s such a friendly, happy boy, although he still feels the need to bark at our black greyhounds when he arrives! 😂

🖤 Kobi came with Jadene and one of her sons and was repeatedly mistaken for Cagney — these two are doppelgängers! Kobi also likes to give a little bark at other dogs, so perhaps they’re twins in more ways than one! 😂

🥰 Cooper attended his very first event with Loretta. This big smooch is settling into home life beautifully and loved meeting everyone.

🌶️ MaiMai and Chilli came along with Bec and absolutely charmed the crowd. 🐾

💕 Newly adopted Georgie (formerly Valerie) visited with Helen. This cheeky girl is certainly keeping Helen and Michael on their toes with her crazy antics! 😂 What a character!

We were also delighted to meet potential adopters Chelsea, who came to meet some of our hounds and chat about finding a suitable companion for her lonely Great Dane, and Carol, who submitted an EOI for a cat-friendly hound and is very keen to welcome a dog back into her home. 🏡❤️

🎟️ And finally… the SoR raffle was drawn!

🥇 First prize: Michelle & Moo — although Michelle had no idea she was in the running, as the tickets had been purchased by Grant! 😂 What a surprise!

🥈 Second prize: P Denton

🎉 Congratulations to both our winners!

Thanks to the PetO team for their support and their generous donation of kibble. A big thanks to everyone who visited, supported our merchandise sales, chatted with our volunteers and, most importantly, came to meet our beautiful hounds. Every visit helps us continue our work finding loving homes for greyhounds. 💙🐾

We forgot to take photos so here are a few other pics of our fosters!

🐾 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WEEKEND EVENTS! 🐾

We’re looking for volunteers to help promote our beautiful hounds and sell GAWA merchandise at weekend events, helping us raise much-needed funds for our foster greyhounds. 💙

✨ Event Coordinator
We’re seeking someone who can take the lead at events and help set up and coordinate the day.

🐕 Regular Event Volunteers
We’d also love to build a bigger team of regular volunteers who can lend a hand at events throughout the year. This will help take the pressure off the small group of amazing volunteers who currently turn up weekend after weekend.

Don’t worry if you don’t have event equipment!
We’ll provide everything you need, including:
• Merchandise to sell
• Trestle table
• Tablecloth
• GAWA signage
• Gazebo

Most importantly, you’ll be helping us spread the word about greyhound adoption while raising funds to support our foster hounds. Every volunteer makes a difference! ❤️

If you can help as an Event Coordinator or regular Event Volunteer, please contact Alana on 0411 817 338.

🙏 Come and join our volunteer team — we’d love to have you!
