Greyhound Adoptions WA

Greyhound Adoptions WA We rehome ex-racing and surrendered greyhounds in and around Perth, Western Australia. We never say no. Toni Donnelly our chairperson took over the role 2007.

As a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation, the primary mission of Greyhound Adoptions WA is to rescue and re-home greyhounds. No dog is given up on however long it takes every greyhound deserves a chance of a good family life! Greyhound Adoptions WA has been in operation over 15 years. It started out as a one-person operation with only four or five dogs in foster homes. Now we have between f

orty and fifty dogs in homes across Perth metro and South West region. There was a realisation that there were many Greyhounds that needed homes after finishing racing and there were not enough places for them to go. At this time, it was still acceptable to the industry to euthanase the dogs if homes could not be found. Sadly, at this time trainers were even able to put dogs down for lack of track performance. We never had the opportunity to try and find homes for many of these dogs. Thankfully through advocacy groups they now must now be re-homed. Toni’s first foster dog was Clover and she decided to adopt her - GAWA’s first foster fail! At the very beginning there were only a few members, some stayed, and some moved on due to personal circumstances. Pete, Ellen, Roz, Kristine and Sharon joined Toni and with their passion the group slowly started to grow. These members are still very much part of the ever-growing team. Many of us remember the days when there were no homes to be had for these beautiful dogs and there were many stressful times with the team ending up with the dogs in their own homes if foster homes could not be found! Eventually more members came on board and the load was shared but the bulk of the work was done by Toni as the foster coordinator. Toni found homes for dogs which took hours of work, liaising with trainers, arranging vet appointments, transport of the dogs and finding homes for these dogs. We had a Treasurer, Secretary, Events Coordinator, Adoption coordinator, help transporting dogs even a page to name some the few roles that came available and were eventually filled. Today we have a committee of 10 people, Toni has help with her foster Care Coordinator role, Five Adoption Coordinators included is our Cat Assessment Coordinators, Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising Team, Social Media Team including both Facebook and Instagram. The team also includes behaviour and food related Advisors, Transport Coordinator and Volunteers. Our group is driven by love and determination to help as many greyhounds find homes as we are able. We give credit to Toni for inspiring us all even when the chips were down in the early days to keep going – the dogs need us! GAWA has grown into this wonderful organisation full of people of every age, workers, retirees, students who have given us their skills and talents to succeed. We have many more wonderful supporters who donate their time making things for us to sell and assisting at events. We have wonderful foster carers who give so much of their time and love to the dogs and the adopted families who keep in touch and come to our events. There is so much more to say and there is always more to do! Everyone is valued the same and we all give what we can every bit of help is so appreciated. So, if you would like to get involved and join our GAWA family please get in touch we are always in need of volunteers, foster carers and help with behind-the-scenes work.

🐾 PetO Mandurah Saturday 30 May 🐾

Laurie and Juliet kicked off the day by collecting the gear and setting up, with Mark arriving shortly after with Oscar and Rosie. Vince and Christine joined us with handsome fawn boy Cagney, while Garry and Trisha brought along Titan, who was delighted to greet everyone he met. Irene came with a new stash of coats and they were a hot seller. She spent the day fitting hounds in their new attire!

Unfortunately, Titan damaged another toenail during the event. Thankfully there was no blood bath this time, and Trisha quickly wrapped it before arranging a vet visit. Despite the discomfort associated with his SLO, Titan handled the situation remarkably well and continued to enjoy the day.

Michelle brought Willow, who was a little unsure of the busy environment but has been making wonderful progress through her training. She spent much of the day quietly relaxing on her mat while keeping a watchful eye on all the activity around her.

Luke attended with foster boy Fred, who proved once again why everyone loves him. Fred is one of the most relaxed hounds around, happily accepting cuddles from children and making friends with everyone he met. Luke is so smitten with Fred that he's currently in the process of adopting him.

Lisa and her husband brought along their beautiful, chilled greyhound cross and foster boy Smokey, an impressively tall and lanky lad. Smokey remained calm and composed, even when faced with an enthusiastic little dog determined to bark in his face. Lisa is working on feeding him up to get a little more weight on.

Spock stopped by and was lucky enough to score a new coat, with a suitable size still available. Nicole, Reid and Madison also visited for some much-needed hound cuddles, with Madison especially excited to see Spock. All of the dogs thoroughly enjoyed the attention from Reid and Madi.

Angela, her daughter, and pretty Autumn came for a visit, and Autumn was noticeably more comfortable around the other dogs. We spent some time discussing the three-second face-to-face rule and side-by-side introductions, which helped Autumn feel more at ease.

Vinnie (GAP) visited with his mum and enjoyed a successful shopping spree, heading home with two new coats and a collar. Mark was incredibly helpful, demonstrating the correct fitting and use of a martingale collar.

Jacob and Natalie brought Chase along with their small dog, who continues to be a wonderful companion for him. Chase is looking fantastic, having gained some much-needed weight and sporting a shiny new coat of fur. He picked up two new coats for winter and would have happily added a harness to his collection if we'd had one in his size!

Lovely petite black girl Katie, Oscar's walking buddy, also modelled a gorgeous new coat and looked absolutely stunning.

Some of our successful shoppers included:
🐕 Titan – 1 coat
🐕 Oscar – 1 coat
🐕 Rosie – 1 collar
🐕 Spock – 1 coat
🐕 Vinnie – 2 coats and 1 collar
🐕 Katie – 1 coat
🐕 Chase – 2 coats
🐕 Amanda Shay's two hounds – new coats each
We also sold 2 of Irene's newly knitted hounds.

With so many coat fittings and happy shoppers, the afternoon flew by. We packed up just before the stormy weather rolled in and headed home after another enjoyable and successful event.

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, adopters, foster carers and supporters who made the day such a success. And thank you to the PetO team for making us feel so welcome once again. 💙🐾

PetO Joondalup, Sunday, 30 May

The weather was atrocious for Sunday's event. Fortunately we were inside and were very warmly welcomed by Jo and staff.

Thanks to Trev, Cathryn, Megan, Alana and Ellen who quickly got organised and set-up. Cathryn brought Trev's Grey girl, Spolly, and Alana brought her girl Halliee, so we had a couple of lovely Greys that the general public could meet.

We had one foster Grey, little Beth, with Robyn and Michael. Beth has already put on weight and her coat is looking good. A big thanks to Robyn and Michael. They said they have had no issues with Beth and that she is a gorgeous, cuddly girl.

Alira and John came with newly adopted girl, Jules. They bought her one of Megan's Cherished Grey Hound Coats, and a harness.

Sonia and Rod visited and donated $1,000 to GAWA. A huge thanks to this wonderful couple who have supported GAWA over many years.

Thanks to Megan for taking pics, and a big thanks to Cathryn and Megan for the lovely Coffee. A big thank you also to PetO Joondalup for the Kibble donations.

🏃‍♀️🐾 Thank You, Team GAWA! 🐾🏃‍♂️

What an incredible result from the 2026 HBF Run for a Reason!

A huge thank you to all 108 runners who registered to support Greyhound Adoptions WA this year. Your enthusiasm, dedication and community spirit were truly inspiring.

An extra special shout-out goes to the 25 amazing fundraisers who collectively raised a phenomenal $9,020 for our greyhounds. 🎉💙

These funds will make a significant difference, helping us cover some substantial veterinary expenses and ensuring our greyhounds receive the care and treatment they need while they wait for their forever homes.

Whether you ran, walked, donated, shared fundraising pages or cheered from the sidelines, you played a part in this fantastic achievement. We are incredibly grateful for your support.

From all of us at GAWA, and the greyhounds whose lives you help change every day — thank you! 🐾💙

PetO Balcatta, Saturday, 30 May

It was a fairly quiet morning at Balcatta PetO. Thanks to all who helped, Trev, Megan, Liz, Sylvia, Lois and Ellen.

Liz picked up the very handsome boy Anubis and kindly brought him to the adoption event. Anubis was very relaxed at the event and not at all fazed by the local traffic coming in and out of PetO.

New foster carers, Sarah and Lachie, came with Black and White foster boy Joey. Joey looks in good condition and Sarah and Lachie are doing a great job with Joey, who is settling in well.

Darcy brought newly adopted girl Nigella, now Maisie. Darcy bought one of Megan's designer label coats. Maisie is in good condition. She is a lovely black and white girl.

Katrina came with foster girl, Aries, now Ruby, as Katrina and Michael have adopted her. Ruby is in immaculate condition all allergies gone and her coat is shining. Katrina has done a great job with this little one.

Sylvia brought her lovely girl, Venus, to the event and they helped all day, along with Lois who came with her girl, Daphne, also a very friendly girl.

We sold a woollen coat, and a snood, perfect timing for this chilly weekend. We received an Expression of interest for a cat-friendly Grey.

Thanks to Trev for Coffee and to Megan for taking pics. Many thanks also to the staff at Balcatta PetO who made us very welcome.
