And the room fell silent

Our normally loud and rowdy room fell silent at Fridays breakfast when a beautiful Mum talked about Overdose Day on 31st August.
She came with gifts for many and purple ribbons and candles for all our visitors for a cause that no mother wants to experience. Yes there were tears in the room, it hurt some hard.

This Mum started coming to CHATS breakfast in the hope her son would come , he was homeless and addicted to drugs, living a hard life.
Unfortunately, he never came to CHATS but his Mum found comfort and friendship with our visitors and volunteers alike and more so when he was found deceased in the bushes last year.

7 Australian's die from overdose every single day. I personally (Rose) had never heard about Overdose Day and along with others in the room we were heartbroken to think of those we have lost, including 2 special men who had become a part of CHATS. She named 7 men here in Adelaide that she had met along her sad journey who are no longer here.

The silence was only broken at one point by the arrival of a visitor and we heard the russling of a paperbag. So much respect was shown and I guess many of us know the pain when someone you know or love is taken too soon.

CHATS had amazing groceries on Friday in addition to a big cooked breakfast.
I forgot to snap photos of the frozen chicken and meat pie that 83 visitors were, able to take home along with a can of drink, can of soup, fruit straps and noodles. 540 items given for free, thanks John and Matt for the heavy lifting and carting it all upstairs to the hall.

We had plenty of fruit and veg along with bread. Thanks Wayne and Jason for another wonderful collection from Foodbank and Alex the bread from Woolies.
The 15 free raffle prizes were,a huge hit. We put it to the vote as to cutting it down to 4 great big prizes, so there could be more time to chat. However, 83 to 0 wanted raffles to remain as is, so that question was answered quickly. Thanks Lee-Ann for organising the wonderful prizes

Thanks community and volunteers for all you do each week.

How good are the people from the Woodbridge knitting group. Thank you so much for your $520 donation. You have just covered 4 weeks of spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms. I hope you agree healthy options are an important part of our weekly breakfast, and boy are they popular.
Thank you Judith McPhee and team for all you do xx

Try to balance this budget for one of our guys.
Rent increased to $1000 per fortnight, benefits $1036 per fortnight. Thank goodness SA Housing stepped in just before he became another homelessness person. Excited to be approved for a 1 bedroom unit (thats all he needs to stay safe).

With the rent increase he has been faced with he has said many times without CHATS each week he could not eat! Its not just breakfast, its the groceries, fruit and veg, bread even winning one of our 15 free raffles has made a difference. Then the sneaky big food hamper that volunteers put together as additional support for people in cases like this.

Our amazing community make the difference of people being fed or going hungry.
We cant help everyone but for those who join us each Friday our Community certainly fill pantries, put shoes, clothing, toiletries and bedding in people's homes and fill their furbabies tummies with the help from The Pet Butcher and ARC Animal Rescue

Also, thanks to our volunteer Christine for delivering a boot load of goods to help another family who recently received Housing after way too long of living rough. The excitement was contagious. ###

Western Area Darts you blew us away, we never realised darts was such a big competition in Adelaide. Fabulous to see people of all generations playing along side each other in the friendly setting at Seaton RSL. If you love darts, even if you haven't played for years join up with this wonderful caring group.
The Heroes and Un**es night looks fabulous Wednesday 28th October as an essential items drive for CHATS. Our very own Dianne Golding is warming up to make a comeback, this should be fun.

Paul Sommerville thanks for your hospitality, during chats-in-cars you raised an amazing amount of $ selling the beautiful WADA/CHATS beanies you had made and it was wonderful to see so many players wearing them.

Loved meeting Jess and Maria who swooped the pools in purchasing beanies for their team and family. Great catching up with Liz and all involved.
Thanks President Chris Lennon for all you do to run such a wonderful association

Wow, another fabulous day. We had 36 people register for a cultural tour at Yitpi Yartapuultiku 'Soul of Port Adelaide. So much has grown since the official opening 12 months ago.

We first met for coffee and cake, I feel the cakes must have been made by our friends at Mayfair Bakery and Patisserie as no one makes such a delicious cheesecake.

The rain held off until.....we stepped outside! Finally the sun came out as Ranger Willis explained all on offer, so many edible native plants, it really is a beautiful, peaceful place thanks, City of Port Adelaide Enfield

After our tour we headed back inside the cafe for a hot pie, the Oldman Saltbush Tawny Lamb pie was the most popular followed by plum Mountain pepper kangaroo pie.

Another exciting, educational and bonding day all thanks to Equity and Lillis Trusts. Wish you were still here to see the wonderful work your legacy is doing

It"s so cold overnight and grateful to one of our eagle-eyed guys who spotted a lady sleeping rough with only a thin blanket.

At least now she has a warm sleeping bag (thanks Bunnings), food, some referral details and our phone details if she needs extra help.

It is not much help but she was very grateful. I hate that we can't do more in these situations.
Please be kind to our homeless, its tough and cold out there.
