Find the Blue Umbrella — Maylands

On Saturday 5 September, we’ll be at Peninsula Farm Cafe in Maylands from 11am–12pm.

Sometimes a good conversation begins with something as simple as hello.

Grab a coffee, find the blue umbrella and come and say hi.

No speeches. No agenda. Just an opportunity to meet, have a chat and tell us a little about what matters to you in your community.

Come for five minutes or stay for a while.

Who are Perth Listens?

We believe politics can be done differently.

We're people from across the Perth electorate who believe democracy is stronger when people have the opportunity to listen, learn and think together.

We believe kindness matters. Facts matter. Curiosity matters. And every voice deserves to be heard with respect.

We don't begin with answers. We begin with listening.

Because good conversations can help us understand what matters, see things differently and work out what might come next.

Maylands 💙

There’s something about animals that makes conversation easy.

Today, a few dogs, a blue umbrella and a shared patch of sunshine were all it took.

We stopped. We chatted. We learnt a little about each other.

Sometimes listening starts exactly like this — with an ordinary conversation in an ordinary place.

This is listening.

It doesn't always happen in a meeting room.
It doesn't need a microphone, a panel or a crowd.

Sometimes it's simply two people, standing under an umbrella, having a conversation.

One person speaks.
The other pays attention.
Then the roles change.

We listen. We linger a little longer. We learn something we didn't know before.

Because community isn't built all at once.

It grows one conversation at a time.

And that's where we're starting.

Our first Coffee in the Park 💙

The weather was wild. Rain. Wind. Even a burst of hail.
We stood under the blue umbrellas.

And people came.

We gathered under the trees at Hyde Park, wrapped our hands around warm cups of coffee and talked.

About community. About what it means to feel heard. About the things that matter to us and the things we wonder might be possible. About why we started this group. And why listening matters.

Just conversation.

And listening.

It was small. It was simple. And something worthwhile happened.

We got to know one another a little better.

Perhaps that's how community begins.

Thanks to those who braved the weather and joined us for our very first Coffee in the Park.

There'll be another one.

Do people feel heard?

It's a simple question.

Perhaps it's one of the most important questions in our democracy.

People don't have to agree on everything.

But everyone deserves the opportunity to be heard.

That's why Perth Listens exists.

Listening first.

What does feeling heard look like to you?

Every meaningful conversation begins with one simple act.

Paying attention.

To another person's words.
To the experiences that shaped their views.
To our own assumptions before we respond.

That's the difference between hearing and listening.

It's also where stronger communities begin.
