Ormeau Rural Fire Brigade receives the Commissioner’s Award for Innovation and Adaption - August 2026

Ormeau Rural Fire Brigade is proud to announce that last week our Mapping Team has been recognised with the Commissioner’s Award for Innovation and Adaption at the Queensland Fire Department Commissioner’s Awards for Excellence.

"The Mapping Team delivered an innovative and highly practical project that has strengthened bushfire preparedness, operational response and community safety across a high-risk region. Working collaboratively with other brigades, land managers and operational staff, the team developed advanced, user-friendly mapping products that improved hazard reduction planning, situational awareness, resource deployment and frontline decision-making. Despite complex terrain, changing land use, incomplete data and tight timeframes, the team adapted quickly by introducing new workflows, technologies and digital tools. This work has enhanced firefighter safety, improved coordination during incidents, built capability across the service, and established a repeatable model for future mapping projects across Queensland."

This achievement reflects the dedication of every volunteer involved in the project — from the fundraising, project design, and implementation of our custom designed Command and Mapping Appliance, through to mapping systems implementation, process and testing through to training and operational delivery and upkeep.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the many donors and sponsors whose support enabled the specialist equipment and capability that underpins this work. A special thank you to the Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama for their outstanding contribution and ongoing support of the brigade.

We always remain committed to serving our community and are continually improving the way we protect it.

🔥 HAZARD REDUCTION BURNS 🔥

Tonight (25/8/2026) our crews are assisting landowners with hazard reduction burns at two properties along Barrenjoey Drive, Ormeau Hills, and another at the corner of Thomsons Road and Upper Ormeau Road, Kingsholme.

These burns help reduce fuel loads and lower the bushfire risk to the properties and neighbouring homes.

Smoke will be generated and flames may be visible from the road. If you’re sensitive to smoke or have any respiratory issues, please keep doors and windows closed and have your medication ready.

Ormeau crews have been out the last couple of days helping with patrol, monitoring and mop-up of a controlled hazard reduction burn at Wyangan, Mudgeeraba.

Strategic hazard reduction burns are one of the most effective tools we have for managing bushfire risk. By carefully burning under the right conditions, we reduce the amount of dry leaf litter, grass and undergrowth that can fuel a bush or grass fire. Less fuel on the ground means fires that do start are generally slower-moving, less intense and easier for firefighters to control.
These burns are planned well in advance and only go ahead when the weather, moisture levels and wind are suitable. The goal is to create safer conditions for the community and give our crews a better chance of protecting homes, lives and the environment when the bushfire season hits.

🚨 FIRE CALL 🚨

Today our crew responded with fellow Queensland Fire Department Fire and Rescue crews to a small grass fire in Kingsholme. The fire, although small, is a timely reminder how quickly things can go wrong.

Even though the grass and trees may look green, the landscape is dry enough to sustain a fire. Our thanks to the residents who acted quickly and called 000 to get crews responding.

🚨COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT🚨

All fire permits, including private and stakeholder permits, will be suspended in the following local government areas:
• Redland City Council area
• City of Gold Coast area

This suspension will be in effect from:
• 1800 hrs Thursday 13 August 2026
• until 1600 hrs Sunday 16 August 2026

This action is necessary to allow for clear airspace during the Pacific Airshow. Smoke from
permitted burns may impact visibility and aviation safety, and it is therefore necessary to suspend all
permitted burning activities for the duration of this period.

All permit holders are requested to ensure that no burns are conducted during the suspension
period within the affected areas.

Any burns planned for this timeframe must be postponed until after the suspension has ended.
