Legacy Week is with us for just a few more days.

For more than a century, Legacy has stood beside the families of Australian veterans, supporting those who have carried the impact of service and sacrifice at home.

It’s a cause that sits very close to the heart of the RSL.

Here at the Oakey RSL Sub-Branch, supporting veterans and their families has always been part of who we are. Legacy Week is another reminder that when someone serves, their family serves alongside them in ways that aren’t always seen.

There are still a few days left to support Legacy Week. Buy a badge, make a donation, start a conversation, or simply help spread the word.

Because looking after our veterans also means looking after the people they love. đź’ś

Lest We Forget this Battle For Australia day.

Lest We Forget this Battle For Australia day.

On the first Wednesday of September, we observe Battle for Australia Day. This day commemorates the battles fought against Japanese forces in the South and Southwest Pacific during World War II, including the bombing of Darwin, the Kokoda campaign, and the Battle of Milne Bay, to prevent an invasion of mainland Australia.

Of the more than 39,000 Australians who lost their lives in WWII, around 17,000 were killed in the Pacific theatre of war. Battle for Australia Day serves as a reminder to honour those who defended our nation and contributed to the defeat of Japan.

Lest we forget.

Imagine being told you didn’t have to go to Vietnam... but having to make that decision in front of 800 other men.

For one of our Vietnam veterans, that was the choice he faced.

It’s one of the many stories shared during our recent conversation with three Australian Vietnam veterans from the Oakey RSL Sub-Branch.

These are the stories worth hearing. The moments behind the history books, told by the people who lived them.

Watch the full conversation on our YouTube page.

Thanks so much 7NEWS Toowoomba for coming to our Vietnam Veteran's Day Service yesterday, and thank you to everyone who came along to pay their respects.

Great work Oakey RSL Sub-Branch President Trevor Steinmuller!

How do you react when you find out you’re going to Vietnam?

For three young Australian servicemen, the memories are still pretty clear. Fear. Uncertainty. A few drinks. And plenty of wondering about what the hell they were walking into.

In this clip, Owen, Chris and Lance share what went through their minds when they learnt they were heading to Vietnam, and what the future looked like from where they stood then.

Their stories deserve to be heard and remembered.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this afternoon for our Vietnam Veterans’ Day service.

It was wonderful to see so many members of our community come together, with different generations standing side by side to pay their respects and honour our Vietnam veterans. This continued involvement from our community helps ensure their service, sacrifice and stories are never forgotten.

You may even spot a few familiar faces on 7NEWS Toowoomba tonight, with a small piece from today’s service set to air. Keep an eye out!

To our Vietnam veterans, thank you for your service.

Today, on Vietnam Veterans’ Day, we’re honoured to share the stories of three Australian Vietnam veterans from our Oakey RSL Sub-Branch.

Owen, Chris and Lance sat down with us to talk about their time in the service, their experiences during the Vietnam War, what it was really like coming home, mental health, mateship and the memories that have stayed with them.

There are moments that’ll make you laugh, and others that are incredibly difficult to hear.

We also asked them what they would tell their younger selves, knowing everything they know now.

These stories are part of our history, and we’re incredibly grateful to Owen, Chris and Lance for trusting us to share them.

Today is Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

Our marketing guru, Morgan Jannusch, recently sat down with three of our Vietnam veterans to hear their stories, reflect on their service and talk about what it was like returning home.

Please join us at the Oakey Cenotaph at 3.15pm this afternoon for the Vietnam Veterans’ Day service as we honour all Australians who served in Vietnam.

Keep an eye on our socials, the full interview will be shared later today.

Lest we forget.
