Traditional Castellorizian Katoumari - Step by Step Video

Discover the traditions and flavours of Kastellorizian culture in Episode #1 of the Hellenic Community of Western Australia’s cooking series that celebrates the recipes, stories, and cultural traditions lovingly passed down through generations.

In this episode, Anna Smilovitis, committee member of the Hellenic Community of Western Australia, joins Helen Anastasas, who coordinates cooking classes through the Castellorizian Association of WA, to demonstrate how to make Katoumari — our traditional Kastellorizian sweet often prepared for weddings and special celebrations.

Featuring Phyllis Samiotis and Rose Kalaf as demonstrators, together with Pam Andony and Frankie Papas as assistants, this episode takes viewers through each step involved in creating this much-loved celebratory dessert.

The recipe in this cooking demonstration is from the Western Australian Castellorizian Cooking Class Recipe book from our 'Greek Kitchen to Yours'

Cazzie Cooking Classes | Saturday 2 May

We were honoured once again to welcome the incredibly talented and creative Greek sweet maker, Mary Raftopoulos, for a truly special demonstration.

Mary delighted us with her unique take on a classic favourite — baklava cupcakes made with delicate filo pastry, soaked in rich honey syrup, and beautifully finished with piped meringue buttercream. Each creation was topped with an irresistible selection of decorative finishes, making them almost too pretty to eat!

Guests then enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea, sampling a delicious array of savoury and sweets — including Mary’s beautiful cupcakes.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special, and to all who generously contributed by bringing along savouries and sweets.

Step into the heart of Greek cuisine at the Cazzie Cooking Class 🇬🇷✨

On Saturday 18 April our talented Rose Kalaf and Phyllis Samiotis brang tradition to life, demonstrating two beloved Greek classics — the comforting Avgolemono soup and the fragrant Pilafi.

From rich flavours to time-honoured techniques, this session was a celebration of culture, community, and the joy of cooking.
