After many years of service on the WestCycle Board and a period as vice-Chair, Tim Roach in January took over the reins after Debbie Millard’s tenure as Chair finished.

Broadening the WestCycle membership family – especially recreational riders – is a big part of Roach’s vision – as is having a bigger voice at the tables where active transport policy and regulatory decisions are made at local, state and federal level.

“I think I've got a slightly different focus areas to Debbie but it will be more an evolution than a revolution,” Roach told us recently. “So I've got a real focus on membership – I've also got a very strong focus on how we can be an advocate for all riders – be they lycra cyclists, offroad riders, commuters and users of e-bikes and eRideables.”

ABC Perth reports e-bike retailers seeing a sharp jump in demand, with one store going from a handful of e-bike sales a week to dozens in just over a week - as people look for a more affordable, reliable way to travel. Bike shops tell us bike servicing is on the up as people drag dormant bikes out of the shed, and e-scooter usage continues to rise.

The case for riding bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters that are ideal for the everyday 2–10km journeys that account for the majority of trips and clog our roads has never been more compelling. E-bikes and scooters can flatten hills and extend range.

If you’ve been thinking about riding for a while, consider this your nudge: start with one regular trip – to work, the shops, or the school run – and build from there.

We’re hiring an Event Manager!

We're looking for someone who enjoys planning and pulling events together from start to finish - seeing people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities out riding, connecting and having a great time.

You'll lead our major events including Bike It To Ballidu Gravel and Canola Classic, working closely with volunteers, contractors and suppliers to deliver events that are well-run, welcoming and genuinely enjoyable to be part of.

It’s a hands‑on role with plenty of variety and workplace flexibility.

In a couple of days they've already had about 50 reports from across the state. Make your report and help make our paths better places to ride.

Are you confused about the state-of-play with regard to the 33 recommendations delivered by the WA Parliamentary Inquiry into eRideable and e-bike safety in its December Ride Safe report?

The WA Government yesterday gave near-unanimous support to the 33 recommendations, with many caveats based on Federal Government action first.

Before this, WestCycle produced a forensic analysis of the Ride Safe report and gave our position on each of its 33 recommendations from the riding community perspective. Our analysis was sent to key figures in the WA Government and other stakeholders in the lead-up to yesterday’s announcement.

“WestCycle’s approach to improving e-mobility safety follows a clear hierarchy: fix the supply of dangerous devices first; create safer streets second; invest in education third; and use enforcement as a last resort,” said WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw.

“This order of priority runs through our responses to the Committee’s recommendations and should guide the Government’s decisions about where to act first and where to direct resources.”
