Memories, dramatic, humorous and poignant were unveiled during our Captured Moments workshop presented by president Muriel Cooper and celebrating the Mornington Peninsula Shire Seniors Festival. Participants uncovered treasured moments to write about. Thanks to our committee members Kim Robyn, Sue Boundy, Dawn Markowitsch and our volunteers Alec Clews Clews (IT) and Sam Leongtave for helping out.

Many writers struggle with technology more than they should, and might not be as comfortable with the basics of using computers and information technology. For example:

This workshop aims to provide a basic but comprehensive introduction to technology as the foundation for further learning and better writing.

Peninsula Writers' Club is presenting a 2-hour workshop on memoir writing – ‘Captured Moments’, with President Muriel Cooper at Benton’s Square Community Centre on October 11th from 10 am to 12 noon, in conjunction with the Mornington Peninsula Seniors' Festival. We are only charging $10 to cover costs.

Over the years writers have been obsessed with the tools of their craft, from the hand-cut quill pen to fountain pens and typewriters. Now we use computers. They allow us to be more productive, create and submit electronic manuscripts, and organise complex writing projects.

But many writers struggle more than they should, and will struggle a lot less when they’ve done Alec’s workshop.

Afterwards you will be more comfortable with the basics of using using computers and information technology. For example:

If you’re visiting Mornington Library, keep an eye out in the foyer for a beautiful local exhibition by Peninsula Writers Club member and photographer
Magda de la Pesca. On the main wall is What Can You See in a Tree? It features photographs revealing intriguing images, shapes, colours and characters – all discovered within one remarkable gum tree losing its bark.
On the smaller wall, to the left, is What Can You Find in a Fence? Here you see all the strange creatures Magda found in a nondescript, grey paling fence. In the middle is the hero of the exhibition, Joy Boy. He represents Magda’s joy at what she discovers with her lens.
It’s a lovely reminder to slow down, look closely and notice the beauty and wonder in the natural world around us. Children may especially enjoy using their imaginations and sharing what they can see - although I think adults will find plenty to discover too!
There is also a sample of her accompanying children’s book hanging from the wall and details of how to contact her should you wish to purchase her photos or books.
The exhibition is on from now until the 5 October. It’s all free! Please pop in and support our local talent.

We are delighted to announce the winners of our Writer in Residence competition for 2026.
This year’s winner is Lisa Matlin with her short story, “The Solace of Water.” The link to her story is below. As this year’s winner, Lisa will receive $800 cash and $1,000 voucher to Somers Cottage Studio for some valuable writing time.
The runner-up is Emma Rennison with her short story, “The Date.” Emma will receive $250 cash and book voucher to Farrells Bookshop.
Two Highly Commended prizes go to Sheena Robertson with her short story, “Beacon” and to Sarah Halfpenny with her short story, “Foreshadowing.” Sheena will receive $100 cash and voucher to Petersen's Bookstore. Sarah will receive $100 cash and voucher to Stories by the Sea.
Thanks to Community Bank Southern Peninsula Bendigo Bank for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity for our members.
We thank all members who entered the competition. Our judge, Nicole Hayes said that it was tough to narrow the winning places down as there was a very good standard across the competition.
