🌿 Yarning First Aid in Action!

On Thursday, some of our Northam and Merredin Admin crew took a trip to St John WA HQ for a catch‑up with Lucy La Cunza, who’s championing the incredible Yarning First Aid program.

Developed through three years of consultation, Yarning First Aid is a practical, culturally safe, hands‑on training program designed for First Nations communities — and delivered by First Nations facilitators. It’s all about building trust, confidence, and connection when learning life‑saving skills.

Our team also toured the State Control Centre, where 000 calls are answered — a fascinating look behind the scenes at how emergency responses come together.

We’re proud to support this initiative as it moves into pilot delivery in the Kimberley, helping train local facilitators, create employment pathways, and strengthen first‑aid capability across Western Australia.

💚 A huge thanks to Lucy and the St John WA team for leading such meaningful work!

🚑🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN! 🎉🚑

Another year older, another year wiser… although we’re still waiting for the evidence on that second part. 😜

Today we’re celebrating our favourite paramedic, Alan. The man who can handle emergencies, calm chaotic situations, and somehow survive working with the rest of us every day. That’s a special skill all on its own!

We’d like to say he’s getting better with age, but we’re pretty sure he’s just getting more experienced at hiding it. 😂

Please join us in wishing Alan a fantastic birthday. May your coffee be strong, your shift be quiet, and may nobody decide today is a good day to test your ambulance-driving skills.

Have a ripper day, Alan — you’ve earned it! 🎂🍻🚑

💛 R U OK? Conversation Convoy Community BBQ 💛

R U OK? our volunteers from St John WA – Merredin were proud to be part of the local community BBQ, helping bring people together over a sausage sizzle, a smile, and a good chat.

Sometimes the most important first aid isn’t a bandage or an ambulance — it’s simply asking someone, “R U OK?” and taking the time to listen.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, had a yarn, grabbed a snag, and helped make the day a success. Community connection is one of the strongest tools we have for supporting mental wellbeing.

Remember:
💛 Ask the question.
💛 Listen without judgement.
💛 Encourage action.
💛 Check in again.

And if all else fails, offer a sausage and a chat — it’s amazing what can be solved over a BBQ.

This week is National Volunteer Week, and we want to give a huge shoutout to the incredible volunteers who keep our community ticking. 💚🚑

From late-night callouts to community events, training nights, first aid coverage and everything in between — our volunteers are the reason St John WA - Merredin can continue supporting our community when it matters most.

They give up their time, miss family dinners, lose sleep, survive on coffee… and somehow still show up smiling. ☕😂

To every one of our volunteers:
Thank you for your dedication, compassion, teamwork, and willingness to help others — you truly make a difference every single day.

If you see one of our volunteers around town this week, give them a wave, a smile, or maybe even a coffee. They’ve earned it. 💚

A huge thank you to Dimensions Cafe for the muffins and coffee vouchers for our well deserving volunteers.
