RISE & THRIVE 2.0 – TATHRA | SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER

Calling all veterans and their families across the Far South Coast!

Merimbula RSL sub-Branch encourages our local veteran community to get behind Rise & Thrive 2.0, a fantastic community initiative promoting mental health, wellbeing and connection.

📍 Tathra Beach Surf Club

There’s plenty happening throughout the morning:

🚶 Optional morning walk or jog
🧊 Ice baths and portable sauna
☕ Coffee and BBQ food
🎤 Guest speakers and activities
🎁 Prize giveaways

It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, meet new people, connect with others and support an important cause.

You don’t need to be struggling to benefit from looking after your mental health. Sometimes it’s simply about getting out, having a conversation and being part of a community.

As the organisers say:

“Show up as you are. You are enough and your story matters here.”

We encourage veterans of all ages, whether currently serving or former serving, to come along and get involved.

Twenty-five years ago, on 11 October 2001, Australian Defence Force personnel began deploying to Afghanistan.

What followed was two decades of Australian service across Afghanistan, Iraq and the broader Middle East Area of Operations.

Today, Merimbula RSL sub-Branch remembers all those who served - those who returned home, those who did not, and the families who supported them throughout their service and beyond.

For a generation of Australian veterans and their families, the impact of these operations continues long after the deployments ended.

Twenty-five years since the first deployment.
We remember their service.
We remember their sacrifice.

Did you know?

The RSL maintains a tradition to honour the dead by placing our right hand over our left breast medals (not our heart, our medals) during a march-past at a ceremonial occasion, or at a wreath laying ceremony.

This is called the ‘RSL salute’.
This signifies that no matter what honours we may have been awarded they are nothing compared with the honour due to those who paid the supreme sacrifice.

This Vietnam Veterans’ Day marks the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Today, we express our gratitude for the spirit, suffering and sacrifice of all Australians who served in the Vietnam War, and we particularly remember those who fought and fell at Long Tan.

Between 1962 and 1973, some 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam. Some 15,000 were “Nashos”: men conscripted under the National Service Scheme who went to war and served wholeheartedly alongside those in the regulars. The Vietnam War saw around 3,129 Australians wounded and 523 Australians tragically killed.

Early on the morning of August 18th, 1966, the Battle of Long Tan took place in Phuoc Tuy Province, Vietnam. D Company, comprising about 100 Australians, fought 2,000 Viet Cong soldiers in a rubber plantation amid torrential rain. Supported by New Zealand artillery, and a daring resupply by RAAF helicopters, the Australian troops held out against the odds until reinforcements arrived.

The Battle of Long Tan has gained due significance alongside many other battles where Australians demonstrated their courage, professionalism and initiative, often alongside our Kiwi and American allies.
