A hearing system. Better AV equipment. Different lighting.

On paper, they might sound like fairly simple upgrades.

But what they could actually mean is one less barrier standing between a young person and being able to fully take part.

If Michael receives the $20,000 Westfield Local Heroes grant, Watsonia Scout Group plans to put the funding towards hearing assistance technology, upgraded audio-visual equipment and sensory-friendly lighting at our hall.

The goal is simple: create a space that can better adapt to different communication and sensory needs, so more young people have the opportunity to join in.

Because every young person should have the chance to experience the confidence, friendships and skills for life that Scouting can bring 💚

There are a lot of jobs that come with being a Scout Group Leader.

Some are obvious. Plenty aren’t.

Michael is one of those people who gets stuck in wherever he’s needed - supporting our leaders and volunteers, helping improve the hall, working on grants and projects and making sure our young people continue to have opportunities to learn, grow and challenge themselves.

Most importantly, he keeps belonging and inclusion at the centre of what we do.

We’re incredibly proud to see that contribution recognised with Michael being named a finalist in the 2026 Westfield Local Heroes program.

A little throwback to National Tree Day 🌱💚

Our Joeys and Cubs joined Scouts and families from Greensborough and Viewbank, the Warringal Conservation Society and Banyule City Council for a huge morning of planting at Banyule Conservation Reserve.

More than 85 volunteers planted nearly 490 plants in the West Paddock - complete with guards to give every new plant the best chance to grow. All in just two hours!

It was muddy, busy and such a great morning of teamwork, with our Scouts getting stuck into digging, planting, watering and helping to create future habitat for our local wildlife 🪏🦜

A huge thank you to the Warringal Conservation Society, Banyule City Council Bush Crew and everyone who helped make the day happen!

Pretty special knowing these little plants will be growing here for many years to come 🌿

We’re pretty proud to share some exciting news today! 🙌🏻

Our Group Leader, Michael Ritchie, has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Westfield Local Heroes program! 🎉

Michael has helped build Watsonia Scout Group into a thriving, welcoming community where local young people can try new things, make friends, build confidence and feel like they belong.

If Michael is awarded the $20,000 grant, Watsonia Scout Group plans to use the funding to make our Scout Hall even more accessible and inclusive, with hearing assistance technology, upgraded audio-visual equipment and sensory-friendly lighting.

These improvements would help remove barriers for deaf, hard-of-hearing and neurodivergent young people, while also benefiting the schools, families and community groups who use our hall.

And now our community gets to have its say.

Our Community Trivia Night was a hoot!
