Supporting your health this winter can start with what’s on your plate. A simple tip is to “Eat the Rainbow”!

Eating a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables can help provide nutrients such as vitamin C and antioxidants, which play a role in immune health.

Meals on Wheels meals give you peace of mind knowing there is plenty of variety in balanced, nutritious meals – making it easier to stay well at home during the colder months.

Do you try to "Eat the Rainbow"?

Today on the King’s Birthday public holiday we acknowledge the dedication of the Meals on Wheels services across NSW.

While some services pause deliveries for the public holiday, many clients who usually receive meals on Mondays have been provided with frozen meals ahead of time, ensuring no one misses out on the nutrition and support they rely on.

To all the Meals on Wheels volunteers and staff who plan ahead and go the extra mile, thank you for helping keep our communities nourished and connected.

Today is World Food Safety Day!

This year’s theme, “From burden to solutions - safe food everywhere,” reminds us how important safe, nutritious food is for every community.

From Meals on Wheels kitchens to volunteers on the road, strong food safety practices are upheld at every stage of the journey.

A big thank you to Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers across the state who keep meals safe, nutritious and delivered with care.

Last week, Genette, one of our Dietitians, attended the 2026 Volunteering NSW State Conference to connect with leaders and share best practices in volunteering.

As a volunteer-driven organisation, Meals on Wheels knows firsthand that volunteers do so much more than just deliver meals. They deliver independence, social connection, and vital well-being checks. The conference reinforced a powerful truth: volunteers are not a luxury, they are a lifeline.

We walked away with inspiring insights on how to better support volunteers, and new ideas on how we can continue to strengthen volunteering within the wider community.

Last week, one of our Dietitians Avery attended the Aged Care Catering Summit. The event highlighted why Meals on Wheels is so much more than just food, serving as a vital lifeline that supports nutrition, dignity, and independence for older Australians living at home.

Topics of discussion included malnutrition prevention (with approximately 50% of aged care residents at risk), texture-modified diets for clients with difficulty swallowing, and the importance of EDAR (Eating and Drinking at Risk) processes that balance client autonomy with informed risk-taking.

A standout message was that communication failures between clinical and kitchen teams remain one of the biggest risks to safe nutrition care. This reinforces our commitment at Meals on Wheels NSW to simplifying communication systems and ensuring all staff and volunteers receive appropriate training.

The summit also highlighted emerging technologies to support texture-modified meal preparation, including innovative kitchen equipment that improves both efficiency and meal presentation. These insights will help us support services in delivering safe, nutritious, and person-centred meals.

National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect on the importance of learning about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. This year’s theme, “All In,” is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. Reconciliation requires all of us working together to make change.

Day 3 of Meals on Wheels National Conference exploring The Art of the Actual.

What a fantastic way to wrap up the last few days of thoughtful and inspiring conversations around the impact, reach and future of Meals on Wheels.

Today, we explored the power of partnerships and working together, hearing from Meals on Wheels Queensland, Meals on Wheels SA and our own Sarah Thomas, Manager of Network Support, Products and Services, facilitated by Paul Sadler, Chair of Meals on Wheels Australia. As Sarah puts it: “There’s a lot of flow on effects when we come together - when we can build on each other’s ideas, that’s when great things happen.”

In the words of Keynote Speaker Amy Gildea: “In periods of instability, the organisations who know how to hold communities together become indispensable. Human connection is our strongest infrastructure.” Meals on Wheels is a national, relational infrastructure making real impact every day.

Our thank you to Meals on Wheels 2026 Steering Committee for an incredible week.

Day 2 of the Meals on Wheels Australia National Conference! Insightful discussions around the Art of the Mission - including the future of CHSP, the meaning and action of community, hearing from Foodbank SA & Central Australia on reality food insecurity in Australia, and the value of a friendly smile from a Meals on Wheels volunteer in boosting our neurological health.

A highlight today was hearing from our CEO Claudia Odello with the CEO of Meals on Wheels SA Sharyn Broer speak on the new Aged Care Act.

Meals on Wheels is uniquely positioned to address a variety of challenges facing older adults. In the words of Moira Were AM: “Loneliness is a public health issue, the antidote may be as simple as a knock at the door and saying hello.”

Meals on Wheels continues to be .
