Caritas Australia Working together for justice and dignity. Walking together in hope. Building together a better future for all.

As the international aid and development agency of the Australian Catholic Church, we are driven by social justice and the dignity of every person. We work with local communities in Australia and overseas, listening to concerns, assessing needs and working with partners on locally-led development programs. With hope, support and compassion at the core of what we do, we work towards a world where a

You’re invited to join Djilpin Arts, an Aboriginal‑owned and managed organisation, for Bathi. This exhibition shares the story of the ancestral Dilly Bag through collagraph prints, woven pandanus and wire jewellery.

Djilpin Arts is a vibrant cultural organisation that, for over two decades, has built strong cultural roots by supporting artists, preserving traditions, and sustaining community prosperity and healing through art. Their mission is to promote wellbeing and sustainability through cultural expression in their community of Beswick.

Join Djilpin Arts 15–19 July at Art Gallery on Darling, Balmain.

In Gaza, the quiet calculation of survival, how much water can be spared today, has become part of everyday life as the water crisis reaches a critical point.

Across neighbourhoods and displacement sites, children walk long distances carrying heavy, empty containers in search of water. Parents try to stretch whatever water they find across drinking, cooking, and washing, often knowing it may not be safe.

We must not stand by. Visit caritas.org.au/gaza to learn how you can support.

Our partner Caritas Bangladesh recently hosted representatives from Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade during a field visit to the Community Managed Sustainable Livelihoods and Resilience Program (CMLRP-II).

The visit provided insight into a range of community-led, climate-resilient approaches, including mangrove regeneration, climate-adaptive agriculture, aquaculture, and diversified income-generating activities.

It was great to see DFAT representatives engaging directly with farmers, female entrepreneurs, community groups, and local leaders to better understand how these initiatives are strengthening livelihoods and resilience in coastal Bangladesh.

We’re grateful for the continued partnership with the Australian Government and Caritas Bangladesh in supporting locally-driven solutions to build climate resilience.

We have collected hundreds of your messages of hope and delivered them to Pope Leo, as a sign of solidarity with people forced from their homes and a reminder that they are not forgotten. May we stand together as one human race. May we all pray for peace.

On the evening of 2 June, more than 40,000 people sheltered underground in metro stations as devastating airstrikes hit Ukraine.

Among them were students preparing to sit a four-hour exam the next day, one that could determine their path to university.

It’s a stark reminder that for millions of children, education is taking place in the shadow of war, disrupted, dangerous, and deeply uncertain.

Through our partner Caritas Ukraine, we are supporting children and families with safe spaces, psychosocial care, and practical assistance to help them keep going, even in the most difficult conditions.

What does it mean to be truly human today? In his first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV offers a thoughtful reflection on human dignity in a complex and changing world.

He speaks to the risks of our time. As technology advances, particularly in artificial intelligence, there is a growing danger that people are reduced, replaced or overlooked.

At the same time, Pope Leo reminds us that what makes us human is not perfection, but our limitations. Our vulnerability, our relationships, and our capacity for love and responsibility are what define us and cannot be replicated.

His message also speaks strongly against war and violence, calling for a renewed commitment to peace, dialogue and forgiveness.

This encyclical is an invitation to reflect. How do we ensure our humanity remains at the centre of everything we build and create?

More than two years after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco's Al-Haouz province on 8 September 2023, the village of Igg is still rebuilding. The disaster killed nearly 3,000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes. It was the deadliest earthquake Morocco had seen in more than a century.

Caritas Maroc has been responding since the first days of the emergency. "The access to this village is not easy," says Houria, a member of the Caritas Maroc team on the way there. "But this doesn't stop us. We have a goal. We don't want these communities to be forgotten."

This National Reconciliation Week, we reaffirm our commitment to walk alongside First Australian communities and support their right to self-determination. Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

The 2026 theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is not passive; it calls each of us to take meaningful action.

In this video, Daphne from Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation shares how we can all contribute by acknowledging history with respect. May we all continue to open our hearts, listen to the voices of First Australian communities, and raise our own voices in solidarity, so that we can move forward together in reconciliation.

We are proud to walk with our First Australian partners and are deeply grateful for their leadership, wisdom, and resilience.

What does dignity look like in practice? It's supporting people on their own journey.

In the final part of this mini-series, Filipo shares how Caritas Australia and our partners walk alongside people who are most vulnerable through accompaniment, care and support.
