This week’s speaker certainly gave us food for thought. Lindsay Gilligan PSM has well over 40 years’ experience as a geologist with a career that has focused on the geology of mineral resources and fostering mineral exploration and discovery in NSW. He finished his career in 2009 as Chief Government Geologist.

Following his retirement Lindsay joined with Frank Oakes and David Atkinson in establishing the Hunter Valley Socratic Society which has proved to be a highly successful forum for an eclectic bunch to discuss many and varied philosophical and social issues. This was the focus of today's presentation with Lindsay explained the meaning of Philosophy - telling us that it’s about thinking. He also spoke of past philosophers and the impact that such as Plato and Aristotle have had on the way people have thought about Christianity over the years.

Lindsay also mentioned the Hunter “Pi in the Sci” society that has a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and is instrumental in raising funds to support the tutoring of individual HSC students in STEM subjects.

LOCAL TARRO WOMAN LISTED ON HIDDEN TREASURES HONOUR ROLL 2025

The 2025 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll was launched on Tuesday 16 June 2026 in Albury. The program acknowledges the vital volunteer roles that 80 women and girls across NSW play in our regional, rural and remote communities.

They contribute across all areas of community life from supporting emergency responses, to mentoring the next generation of volunteers, and bringing people together through food, sport, music, dance and the arts.

Since its launch in 2010, over 1,300 regional, rural and remote NSW women have been recognised on the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.

83-year-old Barbara ("Barbie") Bird has selflessly volunteered her time in the Beresfield, Tarro and Maitland communities for close to 50 years.

"Barbie" began playing netball when she was 10. She has been involved in Beresfield Netball Club since 1980 and Maitland District Netball Association’s (MDNA) committee since 1983, holding numerous positions such as Recorder, Junior Vice President, Grader, Selector and Manager of Representative Teams.

Barbie has nurtured and supported generations of women in her roles as a coach, manager, committee member and supporter. She is generous with her time, enjoys interacting with members and their families and, as a result, is a vibrant and well-loved identity around local courts.

Well done and congratulations, Barbie! You are definitely a treasure and deserve this recognition.

The Cooking Team had a busy morning at Maitland Region Community Support (MRCS) preparing over 100 meals (Curried Sausage & Rice, Chicken Soy & Garlic Stir Fry, and Chicken Rissoles with Mash and Veg) - freshly cooked and ready to be given to those in need who come to the MRCS for assistance. Will certainly tantalise the tastebuds.

Setting up for a day at the Netball BBQ as the sun rises. It's the work behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed but is essential to a successful and efficient BBQ once the crowds build up throughout the day.
