As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man, one of the hardest but most rewarding decisions I have ever made was to step away from parts of my family system.

Not because I stopped loving people, but because I could no longer participate in silence around historical and current sexual abuse against children, and or grooming of undeveloped kids.

Too often, families protect comfort, reputation, and relationships over the safety of children. They ask people to stay quiet, move on, keep the peace, or pretend it never happened.

I believe that every adult has a responsibility to take a stand.

If we know abuse has occurred and choose not to confront it, challenge it, or remove ourselves from systems that protect it, then we become part of the problem that allows it to continue.

Breaking away comes with grief, loss, and loneliness. But protecting children will always be more important than protecting family secrets.

Real healing begins when truth is allowed to stand in the room, no matter how uncomfortable it makes us.
