Preparing Your Bush Fire Survival Plan Starts With One Question

In the Blue Mountains, we live with a simple but serious truth: many of our towns have one road in and one road out. On a bad fire day, that road can become congested, blocked, or unsafe faster than people expect.

So before fire weather arrives, take a moment to ask yourself:

Which way will you go if you need to leave?

Not “we’ll see on the day”.
Not “we’ll wait and watch”.
A clear, thought‑through decision.

Your route out is a key part of your Bush Fire Survival Plan — and it shapes when you leave, what you take, and how you’ll stay informed.

A few things to think about

• Your safest route — where does it lead, and how long will it take
• Traffic and delays — especially with only one way out
• When you’ll leave — early is always safer than late
• Who you’re responsible for — kids, elderly parents, neighbours, pets

A plan made now is far safer than a decision made under pressure.

We’ve talked a lot about cleaning gutters and getting ready for the fire season — but did you know your local brigade can actually come out and chat with your street about any concerns you might have around preparation and fire safety?

If you’re new to the area, or you’re not sure where to even begin with your fire plan, we’re here to help.

Our crews are always happy to meet with residents, answer questions, walk through simple property‑preparedness steps, and help you understand what to expect during the fire season in the Blue Mountains.

Whether it’s a few neighbours getting together or a whole street wanting guidance, we can support you to feel more confident and prepared.

If you’d like a visit or want to start planning, just reach out — we’re only too happy to help your community get ready.
