Come along and meet the Bullaburra brigade today - from 11am to 1pm at the Bullaburra Village Green.

As part of the NSW Rural Fire Service's Get Ready Weekend for 2026, we'll be there to have a chat, demonstrate our regular training drills, and provide some useful resources.

Other brigades across the RFS Blue Mountains District will also be holding community events, so there will be plenty of volunteers out and about!

The Australian Fire Danger Rating System uses four (4) easy to recognise rating levels, each with a message to encourage you to take action to protect yourself and others in the face of bushfire risk:
- Moderate: Plan and prepare
- High: Prepare to act
- Extreme: Take action now to protect your life and property.
- Catastrophic: For your survival, leave bush fire risk areas.

This Saturday 19 September, the Bullaburra brigade will be holding a Get Ready Weekend event at Bullaburra Village Green on Noble Street.

We'll be available to talk about how to create a Bush Fire Survival Plan, how to prepare your home and property, how to understand the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS), and specific steps you can take to be better prepared.

We'll also be training in public, so that you can see what it's like and consider whether membership might be right for you.

A well prepared home:
- is more likely to survive a bush fire
- can also be easier for you or firefighters to defend
- is less likely to put your neighbours' homes at risk, and
- will give you more protection if a fire threatens suddenly and you cannot leave.

Here are some basic maintenance tips to prepare your property:
- Clean your gutters of leaves and twigs
- Install metal gutter guards
- Repair damaged or missing tiles on the roof
- Install fine metal mesh screens on windows and doors
- Fit seals around doors and windows to eliminate gaps
- Enclose the areas under the house
- Repair or cover gaps in external walls
- Attach a fire sprinkler system to gutters
- Keep lawns short and gardens well maintained
- Cut back trees and shrubs overhanging buildings
- Clean up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around the property
- Have hoses long enough to reach around your house
- If you have a pool, tank or dam, put a Static Water Supply (SWS) - sign on your property entrance, so firefighters know where they can get water
- Check and maintain adequate levels of home and contents insurance. Ensure it is up to date.

With El Niño conditions established, there is a high potential for a challenging summer with forecasts indicating above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall.

Warmer and drier-than-average conditions during autumn have left many parts of NSW unusually dry. If these conditions persist, fire activity could increase through spring and into the 2026–27 bush fire season.

We needn't be alarmed - but we should be well prepared.

A Total Fire Ban is in place today, Saturday 5 September, for the Greater Sydney Region, where Extreme fire danger is forecast.

Warm, dry and windy conditions are expected across parts of NSW, with High fire danger across much of the northeast.

Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

A Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for early Saturday morning 🍃

📍 Residents in parts of the Illawarra and parts of the South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Snowy Mountains Forecast Districts should monitor conditions and follow safety advice.

A strong west to northwesterly flow will develop during early Saturday morning ahead of a cold front that will sweep over southern parts of the state during the day. Winds will tend westerly during Saturday evening in the wake of the front.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.

Winds are expected to ease throughout the warning area late Saturday afternoon or early evening.

Stay ahead of the storm:
🔸 Move your car under cover or away from trees and powerlines if safe to do so.
🔸 Tie down loose items in your yard.
🔸 Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.

Prepare early. Stay informed. Act safely.
