This is exactly why we do what we do.

At AAA, we spend lots of time helping children understand their emotions, notice how feelings show up in their bodies, and learn what they can do when those feelings get big.

But the really special moments are when those conversations start happening outside of AAA too… around the dinner table, at school, in the car, or during a tricky moment at home.

Hearing that a child is beginning to understand herself, find the words for what she is feeling, and share that with her family is something worth celebrating. Small conversations can represent very big steps. 🌟

Regulation skills take time to build… and even more time to use in real-life moments.

At AAA, we practise these skills in a safe, supportive environment first. Children might learn to notice body signals, ask for a break, use a visual, take space, use calming strategies, communicate a need, or recover after something has felt hard.

Over time, these skills can begin to transfer into other places like home, school, sport or the community.

It is not always instant. Children often need lots of practice, lots of repetition, and adults around them who understand what they are working on.

The goal is not for children to be calm all the time. The goal is for children to understand themselves, access support, and build confidence using strategies that work for them.

There is something very special about finding people who just get you.

At AAA, we see children relax when they realise they are not the only one who thinks, feels, plays, communicates or experiences the world in their own way.

Our AAA tribe is about belonging. It’s about children finding their people, being understood, and knowing they do not have to mask who they are to be accepted. Once AAA, always AAA.

Top tip: match the energy your child needs - not always the energy they are giving you.

If a child is overwhelmed, loud or frantic, they may not need bigger adult energy. They may need slower, lower, steadier energy.

If a child is withdrawn or shut down, they may not need pressure to “join in.” They may need warmth, quiet connection and time.

At AAA, we think carefully about what a child’s nervous system might need from us in that moment.

Sometimes we bring the calm.
Sometimes we bring the playfulness.
Sometimes we bring the quiet.
Sometimes we simply stay nearby.

At All About Autism, we're always looking for ways to better support the children and families in our community and we have some proud news to share.

From Term 4, our AAA Counsellor Meg will be stepping into a new role as a Provisional Psychologist. It's a wonderful step for Meg, and it means even more ways for us to support our children and families here on the Sunshine Coast.

Meg will continue her neuro-affirming counselling in the meantime AND she'll also begin offering assessments. This allows All About Autism to support and help families even more to understand their child's unique profile, strengths and support needs.

We're proud of Meg, and excited for what it means for the children we work with.

If you'd like to know more, or put your child's name down for support when Meg steps into her new role, we'd love to hear from you. Please head to the link in the comments or email [email protected] for details.

Last term, some of our AAA kids worked on their My Dream Space project.

Each child designed and built their own personalised “safe space” inside a shoebox, adding new elements each week with lots of very specific creative choices.

But this project was about much more than making a room.

The children spent time exploring what helps them feel calm, safe and comfortable. They thought about their likes, dislikes, sensory preferences, favourite things, personalities and what kind of space feels right for them.

The focus of this unit was emotional regulation, self-expression and mindfulness, giving each child a chance to represent themselves in their own unique way.

Different spaces. Different personalities. Different ways to feel safe. All absolutely brilliant.
