🌱 We're starting a Seed Library!
And we're pretty excited about it.
The idea is simple: you can borrow seeds, grow them, and return seeds at the end of the season. A living, growing resource for our whole community.

To get things started, we're holding a Seed Sorting & Packing afternoon in a couple of weeks — a casual meet up at the garden to sort through donations, label packets, and get everything ready to go. Everyone is welcome.

Would you come along? Sunday 21 june. 2 pm. Drop a comment below

And if you've got seeds sitting in a drawer somewhere, now's the time to dig them out. Donations very welcome

Thank you to these little hands helping to save some seeds for our new project 🌱 🌿

🪱 Worm Farm Rotation

On Saturday we rotated one of our worm farms as part of our regular garden maintenance — with the help of a couple of our awesome mini garden members. 😊

We have three 3 tiered worm farms and we aim to rotate one worm farm every month. This gives our wormies 3 months to finish off any uneaten food from the old feeding tray and we get to harvest a tray of rich worm castings they produce.

These castings are full of nutrients and go straight back into feeding our garden beds.

Our process involves:

🟤 Harvesting worm castings from the middle tray
🟤 Refilling the empty harvested tray with cardboard and leaves
🟤 Rotating the trays
🟤 watering the resulting castings (mixed with water) into our garden beds

These photos show the different layers and stages of the worm farm during the rotation process.

Our worm farms are a great example of how we turn food scraps back into healthy soil — closing the loop naturally right here in the garden. 🌿♻️

thank you to the little hands that helped while also learning hands on about wormies, composting, and sustainability💚

Shout out also to Blacktown City Council who were running their regular worm farm composting class next door in the hall. They all popped in for a visit to the garden afterwards. It was lovely to meet the attendees and show you around the garden. Good luck with your wormy journey 🪱

Feijoa season again!

Here’s our resident Feijoa guy, Glen, enjoying a bowl of fruit he brought in from home to share with us at the garden.

There was a great segment on Gardening Australia on Friday night about growing feijoas in Australia, with some really helpful tips. One description of the flavour caught our attention — they said it’s a bit like sarsaparilla cough medicine… but in a good way! 🤔

If you have any questions about growing feijoas or other fruit trees, Glen is always happy to lend a hand and share his knowledge.

We also have a couple of feijoa trees dropping fruit at the garden at the moment, so feel free to pop in and have a sticky beak.

Open Thursday and Saturday mornings.

Pond progress 🐸 The community garden now has a little sanctuary for animals to find a drink or wet their feathers over the hot summer. We’ve added tadpoles and frog spawn, a variety of plants and hiding spots for reptiles. 🦎Butterflies, bees and dragonflies can land safely on lily pads and rocks 🐝
