Our workshops with Garlic Kingdom owner Vele Civijovski on May 1st and 2nd were very well-received. Hosted by SCRAP Ltd and the Holsworthy Community Garden a wealthy of garlic knowledge was shared and experienced by around 100 local people from 4 to over 70yrs of age.

On the Friday, Vele worked with Holsworthy Preschoolers who planted out the bed they had prepared. Later that day Holsworthy Primary students completed a longer version of garlic planting and on Saturday the general publiic paid around $40 to participate in garlic planting and tasting, also sampled garlic and honey and completed a bush tucker walk and taste around the Community Garden. We have just received our Return & Earn results for the year to date (3 months).

Our neighbourhood has recycled over 500,000 containers in that time! That's over $50K back in our pockets.

SCRAP Ltd would like to thank all our contributors and especially our donors for helping to keep our doors open and the Holsworthy Community Garden going. All donations to SCRAP Ltd on the machines go towards supporting the Garden.

They know not....

Once again our flowform pond at the Return & Earn/Bush Tucker Garden has been vandalised ... it was still under repair from last year, but it seems our lack of time and funds for repairing things has offended someone! So sorry.

The school year ended well as this group of Holsworthy PS students received their awards for a Composting Job very well done! From Week 1 of Term 2 to the Last Week of Term 4, the Environmental Rangers composted food scraps and garden organics from across the school twice per week! Around 1.5 tonnes was turned into around 500Kg of excellent compost to grow garlic, chillis, tomatoes, beetroot, cucumbers, radishes and comfrey.

In the second photo, includes next year's new participating students - keen to get started early in 2026, when school returns. They'll all be part of SCRAP's Toil4Soil Program #2.

As Winter recedes and Spring warmth returns to the soil we pause to acknowledge the August flood which put over 60% of the Holsworthy Community Garden and SCRAP Centre under water (see photos taken August 21st around 5.30pm).

This winter reminds us of the extended La Nina period we have gone through since 2020. Unique in my 60+ years in Australia where drought (El Nino) is the dominant pattern and La Nina periods usually only last for 3 years or so.

Spring is now set up for splendid growth with the water table replete with moisture.
