We acknowledge the traditional custodians, the Gweagal people in Dharawal country, where our Scout hall stands, and where we conduct Scouting today. 2nd Sutherland (ARMCO) Scout Group began over 70 years ago as a Boy Scouts group sponsored by international steel manufacturer American Rolling Metal Company (ARMCo), Sutherland branch. ARMCo's factory was in Kirrawee, approximately where Bunnings sta
nds now, and the first Scouts held meetings onsite. In 1971 2nd Sutherland built its own Scout hall in its current location, on Crown land at 11R Tathra Place, Gymea. In 1953 2nd Sutherland Senior Scouts produced their first Queen's Scout, Richard Smith. In 1964 Rover Scout James Buchan was the first in the Group to receive the Baden-Powell Award.
2018 saw our first Scout received the Australian Scout Award, Ben Nolan (he went on to become a Queen's Scout in 2020). The same year our first Grey Wolf Awards were presented to Cub Scouts Ella Buckley (also an Australian Scout Awardee in 2022) and Isaac Schippers. In 1974 the first girls were admitted to Scouts Australia in the senior sections, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts. In 1976, Lesley Newham became the first woman in NSW to receive the Baden-Powell Award. In 1993 2nd Sutherland congratulated its first female Queen's Scout, Sarah Robinson. Finally, in 1988 Scouts Australia invited girls to become fully integrated into the Scouting movement. Since then we have congratulated many peak awardees in every registered section. As of October 2023:
• Six Cub Scouts have received the Grey Wolf Award
• 11 Scouts have received the Australian Scout Medallion/Award
• 57 Venturer Scouts have received the Queen's Scout Badge/Award
• Three Rover Scouts have received the Baden-Powell Award (we have not had a registered Rover Scout Unit since 1994).
