We acknowledge the traditional custodians, the Gweagal people in Dharawal country, where our Scout hall stands, and where we conduct Scouting today. 2nd Sutherland (Armco) Scouts began in May 1949 as a Boy Scouts troop, sponsored by the Sutherland branch of road barrier manufacturer Armco (Aust.) (Armco being an abbreviated form of American Rolling Metal Company). Armco's factory was in Kirrawee,

approximately where Bunnings stands now, and the first Scouts held meetings onsite. Later, the troop moved to a shared hall in Sutherland, but had plans for their own hall. Bailey, Managing Director at Armco officially opened the doors to 2nd Sutherland's new Scout hall, built entirely by volunteer labour, in its current location on Crown land at 11R Tathra Place, Gymea. In 1953 2nd Sutherland (Armco) Senior Scouts produced their first Queen's Scout, Richard Smith. In 1964, Rover Scout James Buchan was the first in the Group to receive the Baden-Powell Scout Award. Women had been part of Scouting since the beginning, serving on parent support committees and as Leaders (generally in Cub Scouts). However, it was not until 1975 that Scouts Australia allowed female youth members to join, in the Venturer Scouts (formerly Senior Scouts) and Rover Scouts sections. In 1988, girls were fully integrated into all areas of the Scouting movement. In 1976, 2nd Sutherland Rover Lesley Newham became the first woman in NSW to receive the Baden-Powell Scout Award. In 1993 2nd Sutherland congratulated its first female Queen's Scout, Sarah Robinson. Since we celebrated our first Queen's Scout, we have congratulated many peak awardees in all our age sections. In 2018 we celebrated 2nd Sutherland's first recipient of the Australian Scout Award, Ben Nolan. Ben went on to become a Queen's Scout in 2020. Also in 2018, the first Grey Wolf Awards were presented to Cub Scouts Ella Buckley and Isaac Schippers. Recently, Ella became the first of our members to earn peak awards in three different sections, having gone on to receive the Australian Scout Award in 2022 and the King's Scout Award in 2025. To date:
* Eight Cub Scouts have earned the Grey Wolf Award.
* 16 Scouts have earned the Australian Scout Medallion or Australian Scout Award.
* 60 Venturer Scouts have earned the Queen's Scout or King's Scout Awards.
* Three Rover Scouts have earned the Baden-Powell Scout Award over the course of 2nd Sutherland's history. (Note - we haven't hosted an active Rover unit since the mid-1990s).

Our Scouts were out door knocking last night collecting donations for our Community Pantry Drive, and we have been completely overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our community.

We collected a large quantity of pantry items, including two blankets, which have now been dropped off at Gymea Anglican Church for the Anglicare Community Pantry.

Thank you to everyone who opened their doors, donated what they could, and supported this wonderful cause. Your generosity will make a real difference to local families who need a helping hand.

And a huge thank you to our amazing Scouts for getting out there, knocking on doors and giving their time and energy to support others. We’re so proud of you! 👏

Last night we farewelled our much beloved Macguyver, Cam Blacker, Scout Leader and mentor. He has hung up his scarf after 10 years as a leader and a long history with 2nd Sutherland as he came through the ranks as a Cub, Scout, Venturer and then a leader. He led one final flag parade and gave his best BRAVOOO. Some of his old Scouts, now Vennies, squeezed back into their Scout shirts to honour him and his service. Cameron Blacker, we can't thank you enough for all you contributed to our ARMCO Family.

Over the past week, 2nd Sutherland Venturers have spent an amazing 4 days on the snow at Perisher.

We were so lucky with the weather, it finally snowed just before we arrived and then we had 4 bluebird days with sunshine, blue sky and no wind. Each day more lifts and terrain were opened up and on our last day we had great runs all day with minimal queues.

Hard to believe 4 days ago most had not seen snow, snowboarded before or had minimal experience boarding or skiing. We also fitted in some OAS Alpine achievements.

Simply amazing to see how far everyone progressed in 4 days 🤩

2nd Sutherland ARMCO has always had a strong leadership team and we are looking for some new leaders to join us.
YES, there is a time commitment and YES there is training involved which is a rewarding experience in itself and can lead to Cert III qualifications.
Some of our leaders have children aging out of the group and will be looking to move on to other life adventures and we need to fill those leadership gaps.
