What an unusual year for WWO. Whilst we get 1-2 Giant Petrels every year come into care this season we have been inundated with 7 in total so far! We love having these beautiful pelagic birds in care as they are stellar patients, they love eating, putting on weight and swimming. Ticking all the boxes for successful rehabilitation and release! 🙌
One of the Giant Petrels had a ring on its leg and has been ringed by the London Museum in Antartica 14,000kms away, less than 3 months ago!! What an awesome story to understand how far and wide these birds travel!
A huge shoutout to The Big Duck Boat Tours in Victor Harbor who are always keen to put their hands up to help when it comes to release time 😊

VIDEO WARNING: GRAPHIC WOUNDS

This Little Penguin nicknamed ‘Cheese’ from Encounter Bay came into the care of WWO over a month ago with large puncture wounds caused by a predator. Penguins have a number of predators including pinnipeds, sharks, dogs, cats and foxes. Unfortunately most attacks are fatal and very luckily this little guy has managed to avoid that fate!
Thanks to our amazing friends at Adelaide Zoo the wounds were cleaned, sutured and closed over. The rehab at WWO includes eating lots of fish to gain weight, swimming in a pond daily to improve waterproofing of the feathers and to promote self preening of the affected area. Good luck to Cheese and we’re hoping he is due for release in the upcoming months once he has has some feather regrowth
😁🐧
