Goolwa Coastcare Group

Goolwa Coastcare Group Volunteer group caring for the Goolwa coastline and reserves Membership has remained steady for the past 13 years. We always welcome new members and visitors.

A group of like minded local people who undertake on-ground actions to care for the spectacular remnant dune system, tea tree swamps, woodlands and coastal heath of the Goolwa area. We meet for regular working bees approximately twice a month to get out and make a differance by actively managing the area with added support from the Goolwa to Wellington LAP, local council and various government agencies.

We have a great lineup of 9 Goolwa Coastcare working bees this year across a range of sites. We always have fun getting out in nature to give it a helping hand with likeminded volunteers.
If you have not already, come along and give it a try. It is just 2 hours on each of the designated Sunday mornings and all you need to do is turn up.

Local plant species in focus.

Foxtail mulga grass (Neurachne alopecuroidea).

A lovely looking ornamental rhizomatous perennial native grass which grows locally in bushland reserves at Goolwa such as Walter Newell Reserve, Ferguson Road.

This plant often forms a ring as pictured below, which results from the centre dying out. It can take many years to look like this.

Our friends at Second Nature Conservancy Inc. - formerly GWLAP sometimes have this plant in stock, which are grown from locally sourced seed.

Our 18th year of volunteering almost over for Goolwa coastcare. 💪🏼

We celebrated our achievements at the wonderful Kuti Shack to thank the volunteers for their efforts in protecting and restoring coastal areas between Goolwa and Middleton over our 14 Sunday working bees this year.

Several of the volunteers also contribute their time to the Alexandrina Community Nursery run by Second Nature Conservancy Inc. - formerly GWLAP, which is so very much appreciated and an amazing effort. 🫶🏼

We will be back into our working bees some time after February 2026.

Have a great festive season and if you are out and about enjoying the beautiful Goolwa Dunes, or riding through the revegetation along the Fleurieu Bikeway please give thanks that there are community volunteers out there helping to looking after this beautiful part of the Ngarrindjeri coast for all to enjoy, especially the wildlife. 🌱🦎🦋🦉

Somewhere near 1000 guards were collected yesterday morning from one of our revegetation sites at Middleton near the Fleurieu bikeway (called Newell Avenue reserve).

Always nice to set the flora free and to see how well the plantings of Gahnia filum were doing and just hearing and seeing all the birds using the habitat 🦋 🐦 ❤️

Thanks to all helpers. We will sort and re-use some of the guards and accompanying stakes and then aim to get the rest off to ♻️.

Check out the progress below, which couldn’t have been achieved without the help of supporters such as Second Nature Conservancy Inc. - formerly GWLAP Native Vegetation Council Alexandrina Council
